The english dubbers for international films kind of suck, especially those for the Jackie Chan ones lol
The Mandarin dubbers for Cantonese films r pretty good

While I understand that for some subtitles are a bit of a pain, I will never watch a movie dub. As a kid nothing I hated most seeing a English movie dub in French. I will always watch a movie in it's original language with subs to the point I would rather import to get the original language then buying here and getting a dub.

You know what I just checked out: The English Dub for Crouching Tiger... and you know what they did for that English Dub? They used English words that closeley resemble the lip movements of the Chinese actors so it looks decent. So at least they're not AS CHEESY as a Jackie Chan overdubbed film from the 80's. Of course by doing this, I wonder how much the story vibe changes?

But, that said: if one listens to the English dub on Crouching tiger, one isnt listening to Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi and Chow Yun Fats' acting.

I'm split when it comes to dubs. In live action, it's absolutely essential to me that its viewed in its original language. Sure you don't get to watch the action as much, but listening to a dub just feels so inauthentic. On the other hand, I usually prefer it when watching animation. Most of Miyazaki's films have received some really nice dubs, which allow me to focus my attention on the beautiful animation.

That's perfectly written.

Lines up pretty close with my opinions as well. Live action *has* to be watched in the original language for me. It's just not an option.

On the other hand, some of the animated fare has great dubs that I actually prefer (Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon and Princess Mononoke, for example). I'd say a majority of my anime purchases are still watched in the original language but I'll never turn up my nose at a good dub.

Right. Well put.

So, back to THIS movie (In The Mood For Love); This film is all about the two main actors' dialog. So no way should this ever be viewed with English dubs. If it's viewed with the English, you're no longer watching Tony Leung acting.

I'm inclined to say I hope the Blu-ray doesnt come with English audio as an option. hahaa.

This being Criterion, it probably won't have a dub option. Chungking Express, for example, has only one soundtrack - DTS-MA 5.1 Cantonese.

It doesn't and, as far as I know, there never has been a dub for In the Mood for Love

Most of those Jackie Chan films from Hong Kong in the 1980s and early 1990s were dubbed... even in their "original" Chinese languages. The Hong Kong filmmakers hardly ever recorded audio while filming. They would typically record the audio tracks after the fact. Sometimes, with different actors.

The Legend of Drunken Master (a.k.a. Drunken Master II) is often considered Jackie Chan's best film. The film's Chinese-language track did not even have Jackie's own voice in it, nor the voices of any of the film's original actors. Ironically, the only version that featured Jackie Chan's own voice is the English version. He dubbed the lines himself, something he didn't do for the Chinese version.

Interesting. I do remember hearing something about that back in the day

familyvideo.com has In the Mood for Love for preorder at $25.99 plus 1.99 shipping.

I can't decide if DeepDiscount.com or Amazon.com will lower their price.

Hmmm... I just saw the review.
I thought and hoped this would be a reference BLuray regarding video quality. Apparently it's not.

I'm disappointed by that too. Still, amazing audio and 218 minutes worth of special features + a booklet makes this worth a purchase still I would think

I guess that's one of the pitfalls of catalog upgrades, they might just come from older masters. Given that I don't as yet own the film on any format, it's still a must buy for me.

I dont know what it is with me, but I actually like 2046 more than In The Mood For Love. I'm probably in the minority.
