Why wasn't this site invited?
And i'm guessing since a HT site was invited there's going to be HT related announcements. 4K?
Max(one of our moderators) was to attend the event, which I assume he was able. Ergo, I hope his intended coverage and your guys’ viewing of the live streaming went well. Not much of a gamer myself. I’m more of a movie man.

In regards to your 4K query, of course PS4 will be 4K playback capable as I already mentioned that several months ago either on my Insider’s Thread or here on this very thread near the beginning. Seriously, do you think Sony would be dumb enough NOT to capitalize on the opportunity for inclusion of 4K support for 4K movies with the PS4? Was that ever of internet forum debate here or elsewhere ? I mean I can see such concepts as re-convergence of D-Cinema source for Blu-ray masters being of some consumer conjecture without Inside knowledge…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ks#post7147792

b.t.w., that post ^ reminds me, when I get around to it, I should relate to folks here what other Studio’s philosophy (or, at least past practice) is regarding the ifs and whys of re-converging theatrical (D-Cinema) 3D movies for the home 3D versions…

back to the topic at hand, but really, 4K support for 2D movies with the PS4 should have been/be of no doubt prior to any *official announcement*. Sap, I think you’re joking with me.

For season 1, other than the crypt scene which was shot on film, How did they shoot season 1?

Thanks,
Esox
Esox, how are you ? This summer, I’m headed to the environs of Chicago, i.e. Lombard and Aurora vicinity.

Unfortunately, I missed the Feb. 2013 SMPTE section meeting (in Hollywood, of course) which covered the production and post production of that hit series. Off the top of my head, without checking, I think that Season 1 and 2 were both shot with Arri Alexas (anyone feel free to chime in and rebut/correct) and those devices are not 4K cameras but, that doesn’t necessarily mean the imagery doesn’t look fabulous, e.g. Skyfall - http://www.latimes.com/entertainment...,5550659.story

Looking forward to finding out the Academy award winner for Best Cinematography this weekend.

Point being, so far, EBU testing with HEVC codec has shown slight detail loss at 10 Mbps compared to uncompressed source. So, no matter what be the ultimate 4K delivery method, if one can achieve the codec equivalent of HEVC@10Mbps (or perhaps no lower than 8) I don’t think there will be any complaints by home theater enthusiasts for being cheated out of any potential 4K PQ.

^ At the end of the article, point being, if one is shooting a TV episode/series (or feature film for that matter), it’s best to finish it in 4K from the get-go even if you’re planning for the immediate future to exhibit it only in HD because if you ever decide to go back and remaster in 4K, it will cost substantially more to do so.

As a 3D (2K) aside to those number crunchers out there who are reading, something which was not mentioned during any of the presentations (it seems HPA attendees are not much interested in 3D nor, amongst other things, Windows 8) is that stereoscopic 3D TV can be produced on a 2D production schedule with only a minimal increase in costs (which has to be weighed against the added production value of 3D distributed content). This concept has been proven with actual shooting of at least a couple of 2D/3D episodes.

To inquiring minds…yes, some attendees at the retreat were talking about “the lawsuit”, around the pool, terrace and such.

Most enlightened comment…”if RED really wants to win and this filing is not the extension of some sophisticated manipulation of the fools in the patent office, then they should hire “the giant-slayer” , Morgan Chu, because in the past, Mr. Chu has beaten into submission the likes of Sony, Microsoft and Samsung.”

Eh, I now notice that the RED forum administrator(s) have closed the patent infringement lawsuit discussion thread. I suspect they feel there is now no perceived value to keeping it open.

Well, I guess until there is a Markman hearing to discover the exact claim construction they’ll put forward for patenting *the idea* of RAW compression of image acquisition for resolutions > HD, those in the 4K peanut gallery are left with thinking about whether someone wearing sexy Red high heels already has, or will, slip on a banana peel…. http://www.edwardswildman.com/files/upload/mistakes.pdf

R3PO, I completely agree with you , I’d also like to see some robust lawyer-ing with this issue because the whole thing has gargantuan ramifications .

Well i was just surprised to see no mention of it. And yes there were many doubts across the net. Even more doubts now since they never said anything about it at the Playstation 4 meeting.

So is this going to be through streaming, downloads, or disc? I would hope they will give details about in the future. Maby at E3.

Yes, I too was surprised that it was not mentioned. Especially considering the media centre role of current consoles.

Speaking of media center; did you know the PS4 won't be able to play CD's? Sony is removing that feature from PS4. It has been there since PS1 and now they decide to stop supporting it. I'm wondering what other multimedia feature they're going to remove. People have been saying MS is the one who is going to have a much more multimedia focused console than sony with their next system this time around. Which is ironic.

What a odd development. Where did you hear that, if I may ask?

IGN states it: http://www.ign.com/wikis/playstation...ion_4_Can_Play

The source of IGN is a Japanese tweet so it is kinda hard to confirm

I don't get the big deal. CD is so Ubiquitous that I doubt anyone used a PS3 to listen to theior CDs and doubt it even more that anyone would use the PS4. Now SACD can almost understand someone making a big deal about the loss but even then my guess that it would affect very few people

It's true that most people never use PS3s to play CD but still... The have Blu-ray playback. How hard could it be to implement CD playback?
