I just got this the 3D is really impressive. Its exactly like the theater experience. I was affraid it would not be the case with the whole 4K thing so i am delighted.

Lol.....your not going to believe this, lol. Okay...just to recap...bought this movie the day it was released and early at that (10 am and BB had just opened its doors). Even though I could not start watching it til that Friday....I needed to get it ASAP. Fast forward to that Friday and Saturday, family kept me so busy and not getting home til late, had to wait another week to watch it. Fast forward to tonight, I sit in my recliner, switch on the glasses, watch the impressive WB logo and the first few seconds of the movie.....and my stomach goes ape shit on me (sorry if this is tmi)!!! Let the scene run while I go upstairs. I'm up there maybe 15 minutes. Get back downstairs, I look down so I cant see the scene playing currently, go to scene selection on the remote, and start over. Put the glasses back on, switch them on again, watch the WB logo again and the first few seconds of the movie (again) and almost on ****ING CUE!!! My stomach is kicking my ass again!!! I was like "WTF!". So I just say "**** it" and ejected the disc and turned off the projector. I will try again tomorrow. I think getting upset watching Indiana get beat the entire game by Syracuse moments prior upset my stomach. Curse you March Madness!! Or should I say "March Belly Madness",lol.

Cancelled my 2D pre-order. Changed it to 3D.

A lot of things had put me off 3D, and I am going to be more selective. But this seems right. 3 hours seems a bit much for 3D, and I'm actually happy about the two disks! I might view the movie in two sessions!

That is (well....WAS,lol) what I'm going to do as well (watch it in two sessions).Three hours is a bit too much for me (3D wise).

I was glad they split it up on two discs.

Got to watch part I of The Hobbit last night!! What a great 3D experience this is! The review is dead on: the 3D brings you in than emphasizing 3D out toward the viewer. I felt more immersed into this 3D flick than any other that I have seen. The pq and detail were exceptional. There was some great pan out depth shots as well. LOVING what I am seeing so far!! The visuals are just awesome. Can't wait to see part II tonight (I debated watching part II on my Sony after part I was over on my Epson....but since this is the first time I am seeing this, I wanted to see all of this flick with the bigger screen experience that the Epson gives me).

You were right Jsmith82: the 3D in this flick is AWESOME

could not agree more the 3D is impressive to say the least and to think the theater version is 4K and the Blu ray 3D looks EXACTLY the same it really is stunning

Watched this on my Epson 3020 projector and although the 3D is good, I didn't find it as incredible as the IMAX HFR experience.

Talking about HFR... is it possible to motion smooth 3D Blu-Rays on any TVs or Projectors in 3D mode?

Most have a smoothing thing inbuilt. Mine makes the picture bleed so I never use it!

As far as projectors go, it depends and can even vary within the same brand. For example my Benq 7000 has FI available in 3d, but the newer and cheaper Benq 1070 does not. It is important to note though that the 1070 refreshes in 3d at 72hz per eye which is an even multiple of 24hz which means no additional judder above and beyond native 24hz judder so FI is not as important. The 7000 refreshes at 60hz per eye in 3d which means it has to introduce 3:2 pulldown since this is not an even multiple and you do get additional motion issues. The FI on low with the 7000 solves this issue though and having FI in this model is more crucial.

Having said all that, JVC, Epson do NOT offer FI foe 3d in their projectors. Panasonic and Sony DO have FI available in their units. Best to check if this feature is included on whatever projector you buy. Having used 2 JVC projectors without FI in 3d and now my Benq 7000 with it, I will never own another 3d projector without FI in 3d as it makes a ton of difference and takes 3d to the next level IMO.

I really liked this movie. Will watch it again with the wife when she comes back. This is a movie I can watch a few times and continue to enjoy it.

red,
As I discussed prior to its release and the publication of its official mastering spec on IMDB, the theatrical versions had little chance of being in 4K…which, ultimately, they were not for these reasons -….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ll#post6848379

Then, shortly after its release, on another thread, members pagemaster and victortubeman (former and current projectionists/T.O’s, I assume ???) posted the DCP paperwork which their respective theater(s) had received – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...er#post6869039

The lists, for what they include, are accurate. All I would add is that there is also a 24fps 2D 14ftL DCP in existence.

Also, something else which projectionists and theater owners did not get paperwork on (as they were not deliverables to the theater owners) were the DCDM and the DPX format masters for The Hobbit, which are as follows….
24fps 3D 4.5 ftL DCDM
24fps 2D 14ftL LOG DPX
48fps 3D 4.5 ftL DCDM
48fps 3D 7.0 ftL DCDM
24fps 3D 7.0 ftL DCDM
24 fps 3D 4.5 ftL LOG DPX
24fps 2D 14ftL DCDM

There is currently no such thing as a 3D movie mastered in 4K. The Hobbit was shot in 5K, but not even the CGI was rendered at this resolution.

You make it seem like its never been done, when, on the contrary….it has, namely with an 800 Mbps 4K 3D DCP.
