I agree that it is a huge turnoff when members with 1000+ posts or whatever or a longer amount of time spent here think they are better and know more than those with fewer posts and that they can just bash them and that's gonna fix things. "OMG this has been asked 347 times today. Search you f'ng newb!" I think that would keep the OP from coming back and contributing again instead of making him search next time. This is a community and I bet it's turning off a lot of new people. People always cite 'those' other boards where flaming and fighting go on, yet it is creeping in here as well. Do we want this becoming one of 'those' boards? There is SO much activity at this place that if there were no responses to questions that have been asked a dozen times already that week, the thread would be off the front page in an hour. Sure the mods could lock them and they'd pass by quicker, but they have jobs, they do this for free. Just don't respond if you have nothing helpful to say. And posting "I dunno" as a response to a question doesn't help either, except to pad post counts. I haven't been here that long or have a ton of posts but I do visit everyday and contribute when I have something to say that I think could be helpful. So does that make me also a "f'ing newb"?

Hey I'm a newbie too. Yesterday I was called a retard because i missed part of a title. I appreciate all the great input here from most. As far as the nasty people here and they know who they are, I guess they have nothing better to do. I told this person in a PM that most people that are nasty with others online would never say what they do to someones face because there would more than likely be repurcussions. I think that's why they feel they can be nasty.
Just my two cents. When people are nasty, just consider the source.

I always offer a polite resonse with a civil warning about the so-called "elitist" members attached to it.

But, here's what I don't understand. If people look at it from a different perspective they would understand something interesting. Taking the time to figure out how to post a thread and waiting for a response once that thread is posted takes about 10 times longer (if not more) than just googling the movie title + "blu-ray" to see if it has a release date yet. So, not only do these people waste their time with the threads and set themselves up for a little jabby repartee (that's french by the way), but they are also wasting the time of the forum members here. Hence the reason that people like to turn those threads into places where witty banter and jovial merriment can ensue.

Besides, joining any club often has some sort of initiation process. Ours is to see if you can handle the pressure of ridicule. Or even better, if you have the courage and fortitude to play along!!!

Your wrong and are missing what a forum actually is. This is not a private 'club' or fraternity, but a public Forum, and it does not give liberty to forum veterans, with many posts like + or , +1, +2, etc. to ridicule or belittle others forum members who might not share in a mindset or fixation of being a forum 'expert' or guardian of this site. Many only want an answer to a question, even if it has been asked and answered elsewhere or under another thread. If that bothers you so much, simply bypass the thread, and allow others less lofty, that are not a legend in their own mind, to respond to be post and simply answer the question. Is that so hard to do ???? [Jim]

It's all about courtesy. Just by virtue of the fact that new members refuse to be thoughtful enough to take the 10 seconds it takes to search and see if their question has been answered, they have already proven that they aren't going to be considerate of long-time readers of the board.

Why, exactly, should I be courteous to people who are being jerks to me?

For some reason the lazy want to be excused when they decide to inconvenience others yet expect to be treated nice in response...and then get all whiny when they get treated exactly how they are asking to be treated.

And then, of course, you get people like you, who decide that you are morally outraged because...well, probably because you are incapable of even thinking about just how rude the newbie poster is being by doing what they are doing.

Are you serious?

This would all be completely moot if the moderators were a little more active in locking up threads. It'd be really easy to simply paste a link of the relevant thread that the newbie missed and lock it up. Maybe the mods are too busy or there aren't enough, I'm not sure.

Regardless though, they're not making a personal attack on you. Seeing it that way is what moves folks into the elitist categories. If you want the forums to die off and only be a place that the "old guard" habits, feel free to continue doing what folks are currently doing.

Don't get me wrong, it aggravates me too, but I just hit the back button and move on. What annoys me even further is the bandwagon beat-downs that people give. It's like a pack of wolves.

Like I said... I, as in MYSELF, offer a polite civil response with a warning about impending malevolent posts. I rarely ridicule new posters, and when I do I keep it on the playful side... nothing malicious. But, like anything else in life, people shouldn't take things so seriously. If someone takes offense to something posted in a forum thread by someone they have never met, then that person needs to drink less coffee and maybe meditate in the morning before starting their daily routine.
