That's what it's all about. People love to play the numbers game because it seems like a safe bet, but, as folks keep saying when they defend the honour of the Alexa vs the RED, it's about the quality of the image you're getting, not whether x amount of pixels are being captured.

Heck, the internets loves to chide the digital pioneers for shooting stuff in 'mere' 1080p when we're looking at a 4K (and even 8K) future, but the reality is that a 2.8K camera is the shizzle right now, most movies are still finished at 2K and true end-to-end "100% 4K" productions are rarer than's hen's teeth.

The low S/N ratio and far superior colour compression of professonal quality video means that it can be upscaled exceptionally well (proved by the IMAX blow up of Attack Of The Clones way back when, never mind the fancy algorithms that studios like Sony have up their sleeves today), so as long as you've got a nice amount of detail and decent dynamic range in the shot to begin with, it'll still hold up further along the line.

I'd love to see some of those older IMAX blu rays remastered in 4K.

Doubt there's enough consumer interest there to justify the expense. Scanning 70mm ain't cheap from what I hear.

Good point. But that Tahiti surfing one would look amazing in 4K.

^ considering that a number of the IMAX blurays are not from the major studios, it must not be THAT expensive.

now where the hell are 'Everest' and 'To Fly' ???

I believe this is the first time the issue has been raised.

As an aside, sad thing is, I remember back in the day when IMAX required films be shot in 15/70 in order to protect the brand’s reputation for quality but, relinquished that requirement when it started converting Hollywood films with the DMR process.
Hmm... 4K transfers for non-IMAX films. That should be pretty rare. Good point. I haven't checked all the documentaries but I think all of the IMAX features should be scanned in 4K minimum.

As for IMAX DMR, years ago, digital projection wasn't around yet. So converting films to IMAX with DMR was an expensive venture. We used to have one here in Singapore way back in 2003, but shortly after Matrix Revolutions, IMAX was dropped and reverted back to regular 35mm projection.

Now with the rise of digital projection, distributing films in digital format is far easier and cheaper. And IMAX has chosen to relegate themselves to use their brand name for nothing more than a giant screen blow up than a genuine 70mm production and projection.

Digital IMAX really sounds like oxymoron to me. But too bad, there are too many uninformed people suckered into the format. =/

I remember my friend spent more money watching Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in IMAX 3D than me on the 3D Blu-ray and he came out disappointed.

yes, whatever the content comes in as, they go out as 4K....minimum, or so claim the IMAX folks --which I have no reason not to believe.

Nice work. Man, I miss restoration. Love all that stuff.

Edit: I meant, "man" as-in "dude", not "man" as-in "penton-man". If you know what I mean.
Also, that was some serious punctuation just then.

I’m out of ideas for now. Maybe we need an adjunct Wish List at the bottom (below the Y’s) e.g. Films already mastered in 4K for which we’re hopefully waiting on the Blu-ray to be announced.
Then you could add a few more titles including the new restoration…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...sh#post7966615

Well, since I’ve been contributing to the 4K lists in this Blu-ray Movies - North America forum, I have noticed that there are quite of bit more Lists of other things that members have compiled, so I guess the argument could be made that if you placed the 4K list as a sticky, in the spirit of *democratization*, one would then be inclined to award all the other Lists (at least the technically objective ones) as stickies also.

Plus, I guess, even though the 4K lists are the most complete and accurate of any that I know of on the world wide web, they just don’t offer the same incentive to purchase a Blu-ray as the more traditional sticky threads.

And we want people to buy Blu-rays.

The upcoming 3D release of Predator has been confirmed to be from a new 4K transfer. So that's another film to add to the list.
