I didn't even think about that as an option. I'm going to sell my theatrical version and put the money toward the extended version regardless, but that would be so awesome!

Hopefully they realize that the people who prefer the extended version also prefer extended bass.

The price of the 3D Blu-ray hardly went down... its still $39.00(lowest I think was $38.49?). How much will it go down on release day do you think?

Yes I knew that. Hobbit definitely feels more harry potter-ish or something. I never really felt like LOTR was a kids movie. It was pretty dark, not much goofiness in it, but in Hobbit you have all these silly looking dwarves with corny lines constantly, and just overall the movie looks like its aimed a little more at kids with all the dwarf action, bumping into each other, falling over each other, tackling each other, helping each other, for 3 hours.

And I think the amount of CGI now and less miniatures and practical effects feeds into that. This movie got a lot of bad reviews unlike LOTR, and I feel all of this really played into it, aside from the fact that the story isnt even close to as serious as LOTR. Its some dwarves trying to get home. Its hard to care about it and you dont really feel like its a life or death thing like it was for Frodo. Its like we already got the main course, now we're going back for some less satisfying appetizers. Ive seen a lot of reviews describe it that way and I feel the exact same way.

I bought the BD and dont regret it, its a nice looking movie but it totally feels inferior to LOTR in every possible way.

Maybe you ought to read the book or watch closer. There's way more going on than "some dwarves trying to get home". It's also integral to setting up LOTR. A big problem is that too much was cut out of LOTR - you just couldn't fit all of that into 3 movies - and then they bloated up The Hobbit into 3 movies when 1 (or maybe one 2-parter) would've been far more appropriate. None of these things (especially LOTR) even come close to the books, imho.

Apparently someone received the Blu-ray early.

Note: There are 7 pages to browse through and these are from just a few of the new/extended scenes.

Possibly, but that seems to be more of a 3D thing now. Granted The Conjuring did get a lenticular cover so you never know.

On a related note, Doug Adams (heavily involved in the music for LOTR and The Hobbit) has announced that the soundtrack for Desolation of Smaug will be released on vinyl. I don't personally have a turntable setup at the moment but I still will most likely buy it for the improved cover art and for when I do eventually get a turntable.

All I will say to you is that framerates higher than 24 are coming, so prepare for it.

P.S. Read up on the history behind higher framerates

Using higher framerates doesn't require a higher price for a ticket. You can show a movie at 48/60 FPS in 2D for the same $5 price.

Cinemas are balking at "higher costs" for their projectors but honestly many of them are still upgrading from showing film. The studios are all moving digital. Ultimately it's going to be a matter of keep up or go out of business.

Also, I'd argue 3D is waning not because of the higher cost specifically, but again because of sticking to 24 FPS. 24 FPS is horrible for 3D in comparison to a higher framerate.

I don't care about 48 FPS specifically. As I've said before I'd argue for 60 FPS personally because it's the most compatible with home televisions in the U.S.

Granted, the real rub here is that once it makes it to PAL television sets at 50 Hz, you run into this weird multiple problem because the least common multiple of 50 and 60 is 300, and I doubt anybody's going to be recording in 300 FPS in the next ten years at least (but then we could argue that PAL TV sets were a cost-saving measure just like 24 FPS was, and perhaps it's time to standardize for a better A/V future).
I'm aware of the history of higher frame rates. The article you posted just proves my point further - only a few films have been shot in HFR, and reception has always been negative.

I don't understand. Why would the framerate of PAL TV specifically be a "cost-saving measure"?

It was on Australian iTunes last night. Might be a late update. I wouldn't worry.
