Download Yellow Dog (or whatever PS3 compatible version you want), burn a disc image to a CD-R , using a program like this. After you burn it, put it in the PS3, go to your system settings, then go to install other OS, and it should reconize the CD as an other OS installation disc. Then partition the HDD and install. Then you should be good to go! I've never done this, but i'm pretty sure that's how it's done.

Default linux

I put linux on my PS3 just to say I could do it! Well, my goal was to put an XBOX emulator on there and be able to put a xbox disc into the PS3 and play it. Thought it would be cool, then I realized (after the month long headache of getting linux to work) that I didn't know how to use linux at all. I thought I could just pick it up like Win or MAC!!!! Nope... so my suggestion.... if you don't know linux don't put it on! If you do know linux, if you can do that xbox trick.... you should make a video of it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you have to format the drive, and will lose everything, correct?

I doubt the Xbox emulator would work very well on the PS3 as its microprocessor is based on a Power PC core and the original Xbox used an Intel core.

Linux isn't as hard if you follow the steps on the wiki I posted. They basically have step by step install instructions.

IMO I'd probably recommend Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3 Linux noobie as it uses an EZ to follow GUI installation (provided you have a HDTV).

Ease of installing programs not included on the disk is another story....gotta love Red Hat/Fedora dependency hell!
