But it's far from necessary. Pretty much everything in the prequels is movable in the sense that it can easily be put in a corner and forgotten about.
Of course it can be ignored - like any of the haters can ignore the PT by simply never watching it again - but I think Mr Rister's right, I think they will actively reference the PT.

That's my one great hope for these new movies, that they might be able to bridge the two previous trilogies in a way that Lucas didn't know how to do, or worse, didn't care to do.

He sure as hell tried, but failed miserably. It was through excruciating overuse of lines in the PT ripped right out of the OT, and shoehorning OT characters whether or not they were useful characters to have in the PT story (Chewie, R2, 3PO, Boba Fett, etc). I'm just so thankful he didn't try to shoehorn a young Han Solo or Lando into the prequels.

Perfect world: Disney buys the rights to the original Sta Wars and releases a remastered/restored UOT and then lets the current box set go out of print. Release the new movies based on the UOT.

As for the new trilogy, Lucas had the outline for the next three films created before the merger, and Iger refused to bite until he saw what he was purchasing. Lucas initially balked, then agreed, allowing three people from Disney to see what LucasFilm had up their sleeve for the new movies. Iger was satisfied, the acquisition went through.

I have deep suspicions there are indeed going to be call backs to the Skywalker Prequel storyline, as there is unfinished business Lucas couldn't get to - by his own admission - in Revenge of the Sith regarding the mystery of Anakin's birth. Don't be shocked if Max Von Sydow is playing a very old Sith Lord named Darth Plagueis, who wasn't killed by his apprentice after all.
That is an interesting idea! Would tie up that loose end in the PT, and would even be relevant to the title "The Ancient Fear".

Why not? Nothing in them requires more follow-up. Anakin isn't even going to be a character in these films, unless JJ has gone truly insane. I don't see any need for the prequel stuff to be mentioned.

No, they didn't "junk the original script". Arndt still has story credit, they just wanted to beef up some roles to give the original cast a "proper send off", which sounds like Luke or Han are going down.

Sydow as Plagueis, wow, I didn't think of that.
Makes sense to me. Plagueis was supopsed to have learned a trick to defeat death...maybe he's like a Sith Highlander, you can wound him but he eventually heals.

If Darth Plagueis is the villian wouldn't he be happy that the rebels destroyed the Emperor and give them all high fives instead of trying to kill them?

Because they're part of the saga. Just because a vocal group of fans don't like them doesn't mean they'll just disregard them. It would be disrespectful to Lucas.

He'll congratulate them at first and then he'll attempt to kill them due to his murderous Sith traits.

Hah! I want Disney to release a box set of the UOT with the three new films and call it "Star Wars: The Complete Saga Minus The George Lucas Garbage".

It started in 1980, with the release of Empire Strikes Back (Episode V was always in the crawl), and the re-release of Star Wars that year added Episode IV to the crawl.

I thought it was actually added to Star Wars while it was still in the theater. It was such a huge hit that it basically stayed in theaters up until Empire was released. Once they knew that they were going to be making Empire and a third film they changed it.

As long as they don't end up on the planet Zeist, I'm cool with that.

I highly doubt any prequel nonsense will be mentioned. Disney/Abrams know well enough to steer the series as far away from them as possible.

Midichlorians are going to be kind of hard to wish away now. They can be minimized and more or less ignored but like it or not that genie is out of the bottle and it will hard to talk about the force and heredity without at least paying lip service to midichlorians.

But pretty much everything else is completely optional. They could reference the Jedi Temple and the archives and clones and Kamino and whatever else they want to reference but there are precious few must have, iconic moments in the prequels.

They could have one of the Solo kids mention wanting to go see a pod race. People would be killing each other trying to climb over other people to get out of the theater.

Hah! It's not for the lack of trying. Han Solo having been raised by the Wookiees was some backstory that was bandied around early on when developing Return Of The Jedi, this is before the Wookiees became the Ewoks. But the idea was raised again when it came time for Revenge Of The Sith and we actually did visit Kashyyyk, thankfully someone somewhere talked Lucas out of it.

You mentioned the overuse of classic lines in the PT, and you're right, but it's funny how much better the callbacks are if you actually care about the characters and the story. The multiple shout-outs in Clone Wars never seem to be too on-the-nose because they're always perfect for the story that's being told at the time (they even reference some prequel lines, too) unlike Lucas' method of shoehorning that shit in for the sake of it.

Unfortunately, Fox retains the distribution rights to IV, V and VI for a couple more years and IV long after that. So Disney won't have a chance to release thoe even if they wanted to.

Two worst in the prequels were "Qui Gon Jin would never join you" and the even worse "This is where the fun begins"...vomit.
