I remember the first hints about a film called Star Wars. The general opinion was "who would want to see a film about two robots who are involved in a war in space?"
You honestly believe this is going to be on a Star Wars level of quality?

I think, were Star Wars to be released today, it would be a laughing stock.

It was lightning in a bottle back in the late 70's; I was there, I know. It was absolutely the right film at the right place and it was the right time for such a film. But that's damned hard to capture twice, as George has found out time and again, since the first film came out. Because he's never been able to match it. He never will, either; he simply isn't talented enough.

John Carter will bring nothing new or exciting to the fantasy/sci-fi table. It will likely bomb, no matter how much $$$ Disney throws at it.

I don't know because I haven't seen it. And that's the point: no one posting here has seen it, so why are so many people bad-mouthing it? Since word of mouth can kill a film, it's really bad when the web culture and social networks decide in advance that something is going to fail -- it really hurts the industry and pushes the studios to not take risks. That's why we get so many retreads and sequels.

It might be crap or it might be great...time will tell. If professional reviewers who I trust say it sucks, I probably won't bother seeing it theatrically. If it's a mixed review and I can "read between the lines" to tell that I'd enjoy it, I'd probably give it a shot. It looks good visually, although I can't say that I like the choice for Carter - he looks too generic to me.

And I also don't like that Disney is pushing this as "John Carter" and not "John Carter of Mars". I keep thinking this is a movie version of "E.R." (which is maybe what they want).

It can't be compared to Star Wars. Star Wars was unique in its time because it was the first time we saw a very high-budget, high-concept Saturday morning serial with spectacular state of the art special effects. Although I will say that I wasn't caught up in the Star Wars hype and I actually saw it AFTER I saw "Close Encounters...", which I greatly preferred. Even in 70mm presentations, the sound quality of "Close Encounters..." at the Ziegfeld in NYC was far superior to "Star Wars" at the Loew's Astor Plaza.

My wife and I were kind of bored by Star Wars. She was into esoteric philosophy at the time and she thought 'The Force' was like a comic book adaption of that. I think Star Wars really came into its own with the second film. The whole "Vader as Luke's father" scenario make the whole thing epic in a way that the first film couldn't do on its own.

Extended spot is so much better than the one they aired during the game. The first half is just not well put together. The second half is. Makes it look way more exciting, as it should.

Read a feature about it in Empire magazine, they were calling it "Disney's Avatar". We'll see...

I am looking forward to seeing it but I know what I am launching myself into. I have read the books and know the story. Looking at the previews, I like the look and feel of it. I do have concern on the success of this one however and they are :

1. The budget could and might well kill this movie and prevent a sequel. It's going to need to make a good chunk of money for that

2. The box office, I have doubt that most people will go see this in great numbers. I hope I am wrong but what I hear seem to tell me it might not happen.

3. The release date, I just think this would have fit better as a summer movie then early March release.

4. People not getting the story and word of mouth really killing it. This could well be the nail in the coffin.

One month to wait and see what I happen. For myself I am looking forward to seeing it if I can in theaters but I doubt very much Disney will give me the chance to see it or rather I should say the theaters won't give me the chance

Yeah, really? Isnt this film just Chronicles of Narnia but with a slightly different setting? A guy gets slung into an unkown world. Guy meets people of new world. Guy and people team up, have a rallying speech about "fighting for blah blah blah". Huge CGI battle ensues. People win. Childhood lukemia is cured. Everyone lives happily ever after.

I mean - its fine and all and families will watch it to watse a couple hours...but Star Wars? STAR WARS? My goshness.....

YEAH!

How dare they compare that to Young Guy slung into an Evil Empire vs Good Rebel fight. Guy meets new friends, discover he has special Force powers, use said force power to blow up space station and end up saving friends and tons of people who go Rah Rah for him at the end.

They Dare? When ... you know ... Star Wars -actually- did cure childhood Leukemia, cancer -and- muscular dystrophy.

How DARE they compare fun escapism to ... fun escapism!
