Runco makes beautiful plasma displays but their prices aren't for the faint of heart especially if you go with sizes 65" and above.

I have never heard of Runco tbh (i'll look in on it). I'm from Belgium so maybe they're not available over here? However I am painfully aware of the fact I need to stop whining on these topics about Kuro's not being available anymore and just find something that does suit my needs. I have a medical explanation for this behavior, don't worry . Thanks for waking me up though guys..

I thought the Runco panels are sourced from Panasonic.

My understanding is there's really only a few companies left making plasmas (everyone's switched to LCD) and they source panels from one or maybe two manufacturers.

Panasonic is really the only game left in town.

AFAIK Runco never made their own panels. It is very likely that they get their panels from Panasonic nowadays. I know in the past they got them from Pioneer and NEC.

Maybe but not for long. I see that they are getting into the LCD buisness now. Or have they always made LCD's?

Sharp To License Elite Brand For LCD TVs

We will have to wait for professional reviews to see if the Sharp Elite and Pioneer Elite brands of LCD screens are able to produce a similar picture quality compared to the 9th generation Pioneer 2008 model plasma screens which hold the record for 2-D consumer flat screen picture quality.
These new Elite LCD screens from Sharp and Pioneer might have a good build quality but the picture quality might be below the quality of a plasma screen. Will need to wait and see a professional review to know for sure.

In 3 or 4 years they could start making OLED screens that in theory could out perform a plasma in picture quality.

Yes, they get them from Panasonic, same with Bang & Olufson's BeoVision panels.

LG and Samsung do not source their panels from Panasonic, they each make their own glass and internal components.

Pioneer Elite LCD screens never came close to Kuro performance before, nor does Sharp's current LCD's, there is also no mention in the article about OLED, so what is the speculation based on?

If anything, this damages the Elite name in terms of monitor performance. The only thing we need to wait for, is confirmation; no-one should expect these sets to compare to the Pioneer Elite plasma sets.

Sounds more like the whole Onkyo HD DVD player to me. Sharp made, Elite badge.

They have made LCD's for a long time, in sizes 42" or less. Pioneer also made LCD's, predominantly in the European market, before exiting the display business.

Yes maybe Pioneer might never make another flat screen as good as the 9th generation 2008 plasma screens. I will be looking at their so called Elite LCD screens and the professional reviews to see what the quality is compared to other brands of LCD screens on the market.

Pioneer has played around with OLED technology. LG and Samsung might be mass producing high-end OLED screens around 2013+. If that comes true then Sharp and Pioneer will need to introduce a OLED screen to stay competitive.

http://www.oled-display.net/lg-display-ramp-up-a-oled-fab-to-mass-produce-cost-competitive-oled-tvs-in-2013

It’s always possible LG or Samsung could become the next technology leaders in flat screen picture quality with future OLED screens. Sharp and Pioneer flat screens might become average quality. Well have to wait and see what really happens.

According to Display Search, Panasonic shipped more LCD's in Q3/10 than Sharp did, which is pretty embarrassing considering Panasonic's display commercials are always about Viera plasma. I would expect to see an Elite-badge Sharp, not a Sharp badged Pioneer.

LG are one of the few companies looking to get OLED out sooner rather than later. Panasonic have also been working on OLED technology for a long time, mentioning several times over the last three years that they would have 40" OLED sets out in 2011.

Samsung just announced this morning their Q4 #'s
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTOE70P07E20110127

Samsung Group more than tripled its investment in the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) sector to 5.4 trillion won this year from last year.

They are still definitely hoping to be first to market with large panel OLED's.

But regarding Mitsubishi/Pioneer, the Pioneer OLED catalogue is here:
http://pioneer.jp/topec/jigyo/oled/el_seisan-e.html

They are producing 3" at the most OLED's for portable devices. They are not developing large panel flat screen HDTV's.

I'm about to buy a used LX5090. Almost 2 years old. (approx. 2000 hours, very well break-in done). It doesn't have any warranty left but the price is right. 1600€ (about 1800 US Dollars) with wall-mounting. Do I have to panic about the warranty being expired? What are some worst case scenarios? When something does go wrong, what additional cost am i looking at? I just wanna have fun with it for 2 years so that shouldn't be a problem I guess since everyone praises their build quality so much..

Worst case it would be D.O.A. Best case, you enjoy the Pio for 2 years and beyond. That's just the nature of buying a used product that you have to accept. BTW, my Pio Elite is 3 years old and out of warranty but still looks new. Good luck.

If any of you Elite Kuro die hards live in the chicago area.. come buy my Elite Kuro fd-151 off me, it seems you guys are nuts about these things.. lol.

Its an absolute amazing TV as I have said before, but it sounds like its wasted on me, because honestly I cant see how its so much better then my 63 inch 8000 series 3d tv from Samsung. Maybe I'll just move it to the kids room and get something else for the living room ... lol

Now if the kuro would do the gimiky 3d shit that my samsung does, I'd be all about it again. I guess its life, you get used to something and you want whatever the newest hotness is, even if yours is still apparently it. lol.

I get that way about my cars too, I've bought 3 vipers new each time something was different about them from the previous version, and then I moved on to GTR. (I've kept the Viper, so I prob should keep the kuro too.. lol).

Jon
