Dr. Strangelove was probably shown in straight up 1.85:1 since projector gates would mask whatever footage that had more surface area. Kubrick knew that the movie would appear a certain way in theaters. The crazy aspect ratio shifts occurred in home video versions in part because he liked to tinker with aspect ratios depending on how people would see movies, though this was also due to using a variety of filming techniques that resulted in 1.37:1, 1.66:1, and 1.85:1 sequences.

He protected his compositions for 1.66:1 or 1.85:1, but he wanted his movies to be shown in 1.33:1 on 1.33:1 TVs (which was the prevailing standard up until his death). Had he seen the widespread adoption of 1.78:1 TVs, he may well have changed his mind (again).

This is very different from Nolan's use of 2.39:1 and 70mm 1.43:1, which is meant to impart a sense of spectacle on IMAX screens (again, not as widely available in Kubrick's time as today).

They're part of the same trilogy, done by the same filmmakers.

I'm not going to take this further, but I get defensive when people undermind my point with these kinds of statements. I'm not a damn troll. I liked this movie a lot. And I think piercem14 has every right to say he was disappointed. He didn't just unreasonably bash the film.
What u mean? thread is for the blu ray dude. U got a problem with the movie take that mess to the movie thread son.

Lol What are you missing? How many times have I said I liked this movie? How much have I complained? I made one post that wasn't kissing the movie's feet and you attacked me. Guess what, I'll still be getting this BD on day one. Leave me alone. You don't know what a troll is obviously. You've been more of one than I have.

Last time I'm saying this, in case you missed it the first time: I like TDKR. I'm allowed to be disappointed and still like something at same time.

Now stop telling me what and where not to post. This is a senseless argument (that I did not start).

Exactly how i felt too. TDK is my 3rd favorite movie ever. TDKR wasn't bad in any way, just not the best movie ever as some people are calling it.

When you plan on buying every big movie that came out this year that has yet to be released & only have a certain amount of money to spend, it's hard to pay over $30 for a movie. lol

They should release a trilogy set same day as DKR. That way, more people will buy it too(even double dip) due to it being fresh in our memories. They can put it in a nuke bomb case edition like how Avengers did with the briefcase.

I actually want a trilogy set. I haven't upgraded BB yet (definitely upgraded TDK as soon as I converted), and it's been hard to pass on all the times BB has gotten cheap. But I've held out waiting for a trilogy set, so I'm really counting on WB releasing one. I don't know about that packaing though. I want it in a normal box that can be stored on my shelf withing my colelction.

If you didnt start the argument and im not even talking about you then why re replying to my posts dude? I said if you disliked the film save it for the thread about the movie not the blu ray. Movies been out for awhile ppl have had plenty of time to ***** so we can stop now cause we got it. Plus the dude made a statement saying "am i the only one who was disappointed ?" HAHA yes dude your the only one who was disappointed. Common man that statement alone is just to throw fuel on a fire just to see what happens.

First off, you didn't quote anyone in particular, and you referred to something I said (comparing to TDK), so naturally I'd assume you were also talking to me. But further, I don't feel like this is going anywhere, so are we done? You like TDKR, I like TDKR. Let's all be friends!

I can't wait to get this. I absolutely loved this movie. While I rank TDK as the stronger film, I find them equally enjoyable. Bravo to everyone involved in this fantastic trilogy. I've been into superhero's or batman that much, but these were incredible.

Yes. All the times I've seen Strangelove projected has been in 1.85. The actual 35mm print image itself of course has the various changing mattes for different cameras/set-ups used, as the 35mm format's native shape is 4:3. The video version, transferred to accommodate 1.33 TV, shows the frames as is withouth the projector's widescreen matte. For example in one of these open matte video versions I could see the mic over the top in the scene with George C Scott and his girlfriend.

Since it would been projected at 1.85 in the majority of theaters, the compositions would be made to work within that ratio while protecting for 1.66 screens too, but not for 1.37 projection or 1.33. Hence the ~1.6 hard mattes in the prints and the mics visible when watching open matte on 4:3 1.33 TV video versions.

Movies are not made to be shown in changing aspect ratios of the camera gates used

[Show spoiler]This is what a 35mm camera without a hard matte exposes on the film:

full aperture.jpg

This it's how it's projected:

wide from full apt.jpg

This is what a camera using a hard matte exposes on the film:

This it's how it's projected:

(Note that both scenes above are from the same movie, which used different cameras in different days for different scenes, but when projected in proper widescreen these camera differences are eliminated)

unless it's part of the design of the storytelling (Mad Max 2, Enchanted, Galaxy Quest, Brainstorm) in which you see the screen widening for effect. and lately, to take advantage of IMAX's huge high resolution near-4:3 format. But all those IMAX shots have to be composed so that they fit within the 35mm anamorphic prints 2.39 aspect ratio, so on IMAX they'd be also "open matte'"
