And things always get changed when a comic book is translated to a different medium. Because not everything works outside of the realm of comics.
The monologues are the voice of the entire novel, from multiple points of view. Gutting these is like watching a view master of Huck Finn. All the action, none of the insight. What a pathetic waste of time.

I disagree. You don't need to hear what amounts to a book on tape in order to watch a movie. Show don't tell.

There's a reason that most modern comic books have tossed out thought balloons and cut down on excessive narration.

1 Movie. Wow. Clearly this proves that every movie needs internal monologues. And you'll note, I didn't say it never works.

What works on paper doesn't always work on film. Ever seen Lynch's Dune? I love the film, but the internal monologues are very intrusive and unnecessary.

You'll note in turn, then, that he didn't say every movie needs internal monologues; that was probably the first one that came off of the top of his head.

Internal monologues are just a different form of narration. If you can't think of movies that are narrated by characters participating in them then I'm not sure what movies you're watching, exactly.

If it doesn't work on film, don't shoot it.

Batman is a detective. That very occupation goes hand in hand with noir. Likewise, noir goes hand in hand with internal monologues. Funny Sin City was mentioned, considering it's also Miller's work. I think the film will be fine without them, but it would also have been fine with them. Maybe they were removed for tonal reasons. Not likely, but who knows...

Or make some other choices that work better when translating comic books or novels to motion pictures.

Such as Hunger Games. They knew that the first person narration style wouldn't work well for the movie.

Well the screenshots look very good, but the movie review does not sound very promising. They should not mess this one up. Year one, was basically the novel put into live action. They should have stayed faithful in this.

I was using that specific example of just how well Miller's inner monologue can work in a motion picture medium. And as was stated, I never said every film needs them. I stated that when done well, they can work. Do I really need to list just how often this story-telling technique has worked in film? If we're lumping "narration" in with it, there are plenty:

Fight Club
Shawshank Redemption
The Informant
Adaptation
The Weather Man
Taxi Driver
Rules of Attraction
Stand By Me
American Psycho

etc.

That's off the top of my head. Stuff like that works fine in the right hands. It has been my major complaint missing from the live action Batman films. I would very much enjoy seeing that incorporated. But all this is rather irrelevant, as I've seen the film and it is great, regardless of what it omitted. I was merely saying that someone stating "inner monologues don't work in film" as fact is rather baseless.

It's either take it a little watered down or not get it at all. I loved the movie with all it's minor changes. I thought it was fantastic.

Yeah, and it sucks. Ever see DANCES WITH WOLVES? GOODFELLAS? Narration when it works, works beautifully. You just have to have good dialog, and you can't be a hack.

What a disaster.

Technically they made some small changes and even a scene addition for Year One. So that's not entirely correct.

Once you watch the entire film, you'll be sold. He's one of the best. Right behind Conroy and Greenwood.

I rewatched the animated series episode where the girl robin was telling the story and I was like wow Weller did the voice here too! But turns out it wasn't him. They sound remarkably similar.

That's Michael Ironside, who did Darkseid in the Superman Animates Series.
I don't think they sound anything alike
