I just bought a Yamaha RX-A720 last year. It says in the specs that it can do 4k pass through. Not sure if its just a marketing gimmick, but I hope it's future proofed when 4k blu's become available.

Exact same concept… Higher bitrate, but little to no actual quality increase since you’re still limited to the same resolution in the final product.

Superbit came out as a cash-grab just as HD TVs were starting to hit the market & now they’re doing it again right before 4K TVs hit.

My Onkyo 709 says the same thing, but I am thinking that's just for 4K upconversion rather than a native 4K signal.

No, not sort of. It is, because it is still in 1080P no matter how much it slightly makes the picture look better, when its still only 'Mastered in 4K' and not actually a 4K(2160P) BD. What will have a 4K(2160P) picture will be the BD's that will start coming out within the next 1 to 2 years, that will play up to 4K(2160P)

Umm so the reason 2160p is 4 times as much as 1080 is becase A tvs pixel resolution is mesured in vertical lines, so a 16:9 tv is 1920p*1080p and a uhd would be 3840p*2160p, so yes the tv is 4k not 2k. So dont tell people to check there math before you check your own.,

What does UHDTV refer to? If it's the 4K TVs that are on the market, then I don't understand those numbers.

Ultra HDTV which is 3840x2160p. Digital Cinema uses 4096x2160.

Ultra HD includes both 4K (3840x2160 or 4096x2160) and 8K (8192x4320 or 7680x4320).

4K is four times the resolution of 1080p (doubling both horizontal and vertical resolution).
8K is sixteen times the resolution of 1080p (quadrupling both horizontal and vertical resolution).
