Spatial imaging 3D is not the same as Autostereoscopic 3D which uses a parallax barrier. With SI 3D you can sit anywhere (L, C, R) and see 3D.

Auto 3D still relies upon the dual (L & R) views the same way that glasses based 3D does. This limits the "sweet spot" for 3D viewing. SI 3D is a totally different technology. Right now they are using mirades of cameras for capture. It has more in common with light field cameras than it does with traditional movie cameras like 3D and Auto 3D use.

Did a quick search on google. And I think there's something in the works.
Cameron is supporting Dolby + Phillips on Glasses Free tech. There's a video that looks fairly recent and a link to a whitepaper that has been taken down. They say it works with current technology and multiple companies working on it, which would be a big thing.
https://www.dolby.com/xl/es/technologies/dolby-3d.html
So... Dolby Vision 3D anyone?

Dolby invented a glasses based 3D system to compete with RealD. Instead of polarized, it used a color difference system. The glasses were very expensive (unlike the cheap ones RealD used) so it never really took off in theaters. One of the few failed products from Dolby Labs.

The glasses-free "Dolby 3D" was first announced in 2012, and James Cameron joined on in 2013. The info has been scrubbed from their English language site, but it looks like they didn't remove it from their Spanish language site.
https://web.archive.org/web/20120526...s-free-3d.html
https://web.archive.org/web/20140708.../dolby-3d.html

This video has a separate James Cameron intro, and also has some additional info, like that it was based on Dimenco 3D tech:

Dimenco is still working on glasses-free light-field display. They have a dev kit available, and were supposed to start licensing a laptop screen and monitor to OEMs this year.
https://www.dimenco.eu/post/dimenco-...gy-to-ces-2021

It might be limited to a single user at a time, because it looks like they're doing some face tracking technology as well:
https://www.dimenco.eu/built-on-sr
Quote:
First new OEM devices built on Simulated Reality Technology are scheduled to be launched in Q4 2021.
This video from a few weeks ago shows on at least one interaction (4 second mark), where not being the primary viewer creates some odd image artifacts.
https://www.facebook.com/dimenco.eu/...2109384860924/

I also can't find any actual OEM devices released yet, either using Demenco or the "Built on SR" branding.

So it seems like Dolby/Cameron jumped the gun a bit in saying it was "coming soon."

Well, better to wait until they can do it right than have it come out compromised. I still don't get the aversion to glasses anyways but if they can do it without them then go for it.

answer me this, how you guys think movie theaters will be able to invest on a screen and projectors capable of glasses free technology after a pandemic and still struggling to stay afloat in business ? No chance.

Understand that this company has been showing Glasses-Free Ultra-D TVs at CES since 2016. You can't see a real demo of the product on a Youtube clip because they are all photographed with a single lens camera. That's like covering one of your eyes - 3D is impossible.

yeah, i might contact them and see what the return/refund polices are, would be nice if they lend one to a youtuber (like Vincent Teoh) for a in depth test and evaluation, dropping $3.5k to be the guinea pig is rough.

I'd pay that much for a 75-incher that works as well as my passive one.

That could be possible for active 3D and I keep hoping one of those will come out, but it would be nearly impossible for passive 3D and likely even more so for any glasses-free type.

I posted this in another thread when someone brought up glasses-free 3D, but there's being someone showing glass-free 3D at each CES for at least the past decade.

We met with four companies at CES: Vision Engineering, Creal 3D, Dimenco and StreamTV...

StreamTV has been developing its technology for eight years and always seems to be getting ready for volume manufacture. We were told the same story again this year...

Dimenco was the second company we visited in an off-site suite. Like StreamTV, they have been focused on glasses-free auto-stereoscopic 3D for a long time, but at CES 2019, the focus has clearly shifted away from glasses-free auto-stereo to eye-tracked stereo 3D....

Vision Engineering is a UK-based company that has developed a stereo microscope viewer that does not require the user to place their eyes into eye cups. Instead, they have developed a unique optical system that creates a virtual stereoscopic image that can be seen in a defined headbox....

Creal 3D is a new Swiss company that claims to have developed a light field 3D display.
