Cinema Guild has acquired Tsai Ming-liang's Stray Dogs. With that and Lav Diaz's Norte: The End of History, CG have quite an impressive roster this year.

My two most anticipated for 2014, they've certainly been stepping it up. Especially with other interesting acquisitions such as Viola, The Last Time I Saw Macao, Cousin Jules, and What Now? Remind Me. I hope we see a bigger ratio of Blu-ray to DVD this year.

EDIT: Almost forgot, Manakamana as well.

Nice thread.

I ordered Leviathan back in November but ImportCDs never got any stock in. I noticed that B&N only offers the title through 3rd party sellers. Not sure if this is revealing something of CG's distribution or of the retailer's stocking decisions.

Terrific director with a hugely original style. I will immediately purchase Stray Dogs on Blu-ray. I believe that it will be the first English-language Blu-ray, or any Blu-ray, release of a Tsai Ming-Liang film.

I also hope that his older works appear on Blu-ray. I have six of his films in my library and they are all very special.

The Wayward Cloud is utterly atmospheric. Some of the dance sequences are incredibly original.

Face I have on a top-notch release from France. Contrary to what some critics have written in America, the film is sensational. Laetitia Casta is mesmerizing. This film begs to be seen on Blu-ray.

There is also a top-notch French DVD release of Good Bye, Dragon Inn that makes the U.S. DVD look like VHS. Top film!

Thanks for the home video info Pro-B. So far I only own two of his releases. First is The Wayward Cloud on UK DVD which looks great and comes with a nice interview. Then I also have the Taiwanese Blu-ray of Vive l'Amour which I believe is the only Blu-ray release he's had so far, it looks utterly gorgeous and has decent English subs.

I'm really hoping for The Hole to get a Blu-ray release, the DVD release could look a lot better.

I know that Anderson re-edited it a few years ago to replace the clips with footage from an HD source. Whether or not it amounts to more than a like for like swap I don't know.

Thanks for updating this and the New Wave Films thread, Pro-B. The Anderson news is wonderful.

I emailed CG about the Sensory Ethnography Lab film People's Park which they acquired a while back, and they told me that it will be having a VOD release.

Cool--I've found Sweetgrass, Leviathan, and Manakamana very rewarding.

I still need to see Sweetgrass, but I definitely agree on the latter two. The SEL group have to be some of the most intriguing filmmakers today.

You don't need to thank me, SimBelm. Actually, I need to thank you for creating and maintaining this thread.

PRESS RELEASE:

Quote:
CINEMA GUILD ACQUIRES MATIAS PIÑEIRO’S “THE PRINCESS OF FRANCE,”

AHEAD OF ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT THE LOCARNO FILM FESTIVAL

Cinema Guild distributed Piñeiro’s previous film “VIOLA”

NEW YORK—Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of all U.S. distribution rights to “The Princess of France,” Matías Piñeiro’s stunning follow up to his critically acclaimed breakthrough film “Viola,” released by Cinema Guild in 2013. “The Princess of France” will have its world premiere tomorrow at the Locarno Film Festival and will play select festivals throughout the fall. It will open theatrically early in 2015.

A year after his father’s death, Victor returns to Buenos Aires in order to reconquer the life he was forced to abandon. He brings a new project with him for his former theater company: a radio-play of Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” a play they had all worked on together before he left. Waiting for him to start rehearsing are five actresses who know him all too well: his girlfriend, Paula, who swore him faithfulness; Ana, his lover, who doubts his love; his ex, Natalia, who believes he still loves her; her friend, Lorena, who hopes he will make a move on her; and Carla, a total stranger, who could be his next true love.

“I’m happy to be working again with Cinema Guild after the positive experience of ‘Viola.’ I feel that Cinema Guild has become a member of my film-family as my actors and crew have been for the last eight years. I treasure familiarity. Not only do I join both a beautiful catalogue of films and a brave company, but also further develop a relationship that aligns to the values that guide my own filmmaking,” commented filmmaker Matias Piñeiro.

“‘Princess of France’ is an absolute marvel, a film bursting with ideas and mysteries that will delight fans of ‘Viola’ and newcomers alike,” added Ryan Krivoshey. “We are incredibly thrilled to be releasing it and to continue our relationship with Matias, who has indeed come to be a dear friend.”

Born in Argentina in 1982, Matías Piñeiro studied at the Universidad del cine in Buenos Aires, where he taught filmmaking and film history for five years. In 2011, he moved to the U.S. to undertake the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship at Harvard University, followed by an MFA degree at New York University. His films include “The Stolen Man” (2007), “They All Lie” (2009), which was selected at Locarno in the Concorso Cineasti del presente, “Rosalinda” (2010) and “Viola.” (2012). Splitting his time between New York and Buenos Aires, Matías Piñeiro is currently developing the fourth installment of his Shakespearean project, “Hermia & Helena,” which will be his first English-language film.

The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of The Cinema Guild with Matías Piñeiro.

The Cinema Guild is a premier distributor of independent, foreign and documentary films, whose recent releases include Lav Diaz’ “Norte, The End of History” and Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez’s “Manakamana.” Upcoming releases include Joaquim Pinto’s “What Now? Remind Me,” Tsai Ming-liang’s “Stray Dogs,” Robert Greene’s “Actress,” Sergei Loznitsa’s “Maidan” and Corneliu Porumboiu’s “When Evening Falls on Bucharest or Metabolism.”

The Death of Louis XIV looks great on blu-ray. Decent supplements too.

Definitely worth purchasing for fans of Serra, Leaud or films about historical figures that are different from the norm.

Cinema Guild delayed Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s The Wild Pear Tree to October to include a second disc with the entire making of, as a supplement.

They also picked up Albert Serra’s Liberty for distribution in the U.S.

just ordered Suburban Birds. It looks good. It seems like Chinese art films have finally been getting more bluray releases lately. I'm all for it.
