I don't think they ever said it was more challenging than any previous games. I would imagine Dark Souls 2 would be the baseline. They seem to be making them slightly more and more accessible each release.

Not too sure if this game is going to be similar to Devil May Cry or what but that game seems at least somewhat similar to Bloodborne. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You know, I have never played any of the demon souls or dark souls games, but after carefully reading impressions and watching trailers and the alpha testing, I have come to the conclusion that that game is going to be AWESOME. Edge magazine has called it a "dark masterpiece". The setting looks amazing, the graphics look amazing, the sound is amazing, combat looks amazing. Everything is amazing about this game. So, I couldn't help it, I pre-ordered the collector's edition! I think people who skip playing this game will be really missing out. IMO, without any doubts this will be one of, if not, THE top game of 2015. Again, I'm saying this, but I have never even played a demon or dark souls game.

Though an hour wasn't totally enough to wean me off all the habits I learned while playing From Software's previous games, I am no longer a shieldmaiden of Lordran. Prior to playing, I had thought I'd just stick to my Souls' 'block, slash, back off, wait' mantra whenever and however I could. Playing through just an hour of Bloodborne, I can see that simply won't be the case, and nor do I want it to be. I'm a convert; in Yharnam, a good offence is the best defence, and that's the song I'll be singing come release day.

It was a tense and eerie gameplay session, with each new enemy crushing my soul as I gripped the controller. One creature--a looming skeletal arthropod--looked like an ancient fossil come to life, and several of them lobbed balls of fire towards me. It was a phenomenal sight and a challenging area, given that I had to deal with bell-ringers and other adversaries in addition to the fireball-spewing freaks. But once I learned to close the distance and flail away on the skittering things' tails, they weren't long for this world. And so it will go in the full game, I imagine: moving through the darkness and fog, and discovering new ways to destroy whatever gross brute stands in your path. We'll know soon enough--and I am already stocking up on anti-anxiety medicine in anticipation.

The rhythm and style of the combat is different, you see, even if it might look broadly similar. In Souls you’re usually on the defensive - you walk into a room with your shield up and can take a few hits before reacting. That just does not happen in Bloodborne. You don’t even have a shield. When something hits you, you have to hit back, and quickly, to regain health. My initial instinct was to dodge backwards and regroup after getting hit by some screaming madman with a cleaver, but after a while my mindset changed and I was lunging back aggressively with my own transforming cleaver after every blow I took. It’s exceptionally aggressive and exciting and on-edge. Every single encounter feels like life or death, and it usually is.

Even so, and in spite my short time with the game, there's no doubt in my mind that Bloodborne will be the first truly great PlayStation 4 exclusive. The question is whether it will be Dark Souls II great or Dark Souls/Demon's Souls really great. We'll know that, as well as the exact level of punishment we are in for, when the game finally releases next week.

FromSoftware appear to be doing something very smart here – by taking what they know, and finding new ways of tease interesting mechanics out of it. With aggressive, flowing combat, and bleak, haunting environments, Bloodborne looks to be everything you’d want out of a successor to a much-loved franchise.

I don't want to say this game will be slow to catch on, because I think it's very highly anticipated, but because of the reputation of the Souls games, and what has continued to sound like a fairly substantial change in the gameplay, I would not be surprised if there was not a brief plateau after day 1 sales followed by an explosion in new game sales once word gets out how awesome it is. I'm just assuming it's going to be awesome.

It's happening already. Guys did not play Souls games, because of what they heard, who are starting to cave and let us know they preordered it, too.
