Am amazed there is any love for it at all, especially from Hauer devotees. On the heels of OSTERMAN and LADYHAWKE, which for all their flaws, still mostly work -- well enough for repeat viewings anyway -- this pretty much killed my interest in Hauer's work going forward, and about the only exception to that is SPLIT-SECOND, which I unabashedly love, owing as much to the 2nd banana (who I last saw on the BABYLON 5 season-4 ender) as to the Hauer character's quirky charm.
Swivels around in his chair, sees Wanted: Dead or Alive in his unwatched pile, leans over, moves it down a few spots.....

The commentary is about 8 seconds ahead of the picture which is slightly annoying since what they talk about does'nt match whats on screen but its a solid track.

+1

Also contains one of the best endings in 80's action cinema.

The film has an interesting setting but I understand your point. It's essentially a crime drama except with a monster as the culprit. Twirling coffee with a pen however still makes me chuckle.

Enjoyed this a lot more than my memory of it, its much more into the realms of knowing parody whilst still playing things straight.

What really comes to mind actually is Red Dwarf from around the same era, take out the more overt comedy and leave in the low budget monsters/guns and over the top dialog/characters is not far off.

Quality wise I'm not generally a lofi nostalgia fan but I do think given that the kind of lower contrast softer look arguably suits this better, perhaps innate to the source?
