Those early DI's are what they are, they grappled a lot with sharpening and grain management (particularly when shooting Super 35) and the results weren't nearly as transparent as they are today. The Two Towers has some absolutely nasty noise-reduced smearing baked in during some scenes and that is NOT going to look pleasant on the eventual UHD version.

We're finally back on topic after 3 pages discussing how amazing a user is. Nice!

It's disappointing to hear this has banding. Although, whites tend to show a bit of banding. Arrival suffers from banding in the whites.

Detail is generall very good, and the WCG and HDR make the colors EXPLOSIVE, particularly during the ocean scenes. I will say the transfer is a bit bright for my tastes, but I'm sure others will find that to be a striking plus. I did notice some banding issues here and there, especially in fog.
Thanks for the early info about the 4K version of this movie.

Just watched some of Brass Tax's reviews for the first time, and I gotta say, I was very entertained. I laughed a bunch of times during the reviews I watched, and more importantly, I immediately feel as though I can rely on his reviews. From the ones I've seen so far, his 3D reviews have been spot on, he covers all the points I would want to hear, and I feel like when it comes time to start purchasing UHD discs, it will be his reviews that I will be turning to. I also like that his actual reviews of the films themselves are entertaining but kept fairly short. It's of course subjective when it comes to film reviews but I did find myself agreeing with his takes on the films I've seen him review so far.

Keep up the great work!

That's the new Kong movie coming out next week. Personally for that one, the BB steel is my favorite version.

Default Ordered this title for in-store pickup later today...

Along with Fifth Element 4K and Fate of the Furious 4K, minus a $20 BB rewards certificate I figured it was worth it for $53 total with tax. Haven't seen King Kong in a long time.

I just got it from my local Walmart. Brickseek said they had 3 copies and they did.
$19.96 -- with tax, a savings of $4.67 over my cancelled Amazon pre-order.
"It's not the principal -- it's the money."

And currently without Prime I wasn't going to get it for almost another week from Amazon.

Of course it has both versions -- my paranoia not withstanding. Currently listening to it in all its DTS:X glory. Looks so good!

Thank you to the poster who first mentioned the Walmart price!
You guys are great for this stuff.

And about an hour after I bought it I checked with Brickseek and sure enough one copy was deducted -- so it's nice to know it's accurate.

Hey, late to the party, but welcome BrassTax!

I have no qualms with the "Flair" in your videos, but you make a good point; YT is for entertainment purposes and your reviews certainly entertain. Not a style befit for everyone, but it's entertainment nonetheless. Really, I do find your reviews match with my findings of discs technical merits and that's exactly what I want.

I'll admit that I was on the fence on picking this one up, but the BT review tipped me over the fence.

Regarding the King Kong movie itself, I really enjoyed the movie when I saw it in theaters and at home. However, the CGI sometimes stood out like a sore thumb. Naomi Watts juggling really stood out to me. I guess since I married into a family that does professional juggling gigs, the fact that she wasn't actually juggling really stood out to me. Also, green screen running and chases slightly took me out of the experience.

On the other hand, Kong himself and many other CG elements do look downright impressive and that's really what mattered in the long run.

I'm looking forward to picking up my copy and watching it.

Such a minor thing, I know. Just a scene that I could recall that stood out more to me. It didn't really take away from my enjoyment from the film, same with the noticeable green screen shots. Those instances were only noticeable on occasion and there rest of the movie which was so heavy-laden with gorgeous CG makes up for it in spades.

Also, I actually like your nitpickiness, G. It's helpful for reviews, so that way I am not reading the same regurgitated tripe over and over. A couple well-respected reviewers get on my nerves because of that.

For me, I'm picking it up because it really is the complete package. I get the best transfer, the extended and theatrical cut, and all the extras. Plus I really like the film and feel that it gets a lot of undeserved hate.

John Archer of Forbes just tweeted that this movie in 4k is stunning, and will be putting up a full review soon.

Agreed. The entire scene when the search party falls into the pit, creepy and scary.

Me being me I did actually think there was something a bit hinky about that scene, I'm no juggling expert but the 'weight' of movement just looks all wrong. But then so much of the movie is CGI'd up the arsecrack it's not really a surprise that even juggling balls is CG.

As said above this looks like an absolutely stonking package so even though I never really cared for the film a great deal I wanna pick it up on 4K anyway.
