Yikes!

One of the writers is bragging about having never watched anything related to SW before and had to ask if Luke and Leia were siblings or not.

Ummmmm…..yeah. Seriously? I hate to have to go here but has this writer been chosen to inject a little "non essential bull shit" into the show? Please no. Can we just not?

Since a Real American Hero, and the various comics the only good G.I. Joe has been Resolute. Written by Warren Ellis who never saw any of the other material.

You need fresh ideas. You need people not shackled by dogma. All writers rooms need at least one person to question every idea.

I dont disagree with the bolded statement. Just not totally sure if someone 100% completely unfamiliar at any level with material like Star Wars is the best choice here.

If you’re a fan of Andor then this is no cause for alarm since the writers room was similar to this. Writers who are fans mixed with writers who have no prior affinity to the franchise.

The writers are working for the showrunner, and in this case the showrunner of Acolyte has a wide ranging knowledge of SW. Tony Gilroy (the showrunner of Andor) was casually familiar with SW but never an active fan and gets help from the story group to fill him in on lore stuff when necessary.

After BOBF, Kenobi and S3 of Mando, SW is flat lining for me. Only Andor S2 has my interest.

Nick Meyer wasn’t a Star Trek fan and made the best Star Trek movie The Wrath of Khan. So yeah no problem.

He became a fan afterwards though. And did his research after getting the gig.

You don’t have to be a fan initially, but once you get the job, check it out. I think any writer should at least watch the original Star Wars to understand the essence of what George Lucas was trying to say. And anyone should watch it anyway because it’s also one of the most influential films of all time.

Would you trust me to craft a Lord of the Rings story if I’d never read a word of Tolkien nor will?

Directing a movie and writing it are not one and the same. Even still, just getting a writer who has experience with the genre is more promising than a complete novice who is out of their depth. You have a writer's room with a marker board full of listings that mentions diversity and representation 3 times... and dinosaurs. That's the level of creativity we're dealing with... do I even need to mention the character in high republic who is literally a rock?

Fans would be nice, but more importantly we need legit writers of science fiction and idea people who have an imagination. Not some social group with only a thin surface level grasp of Star Wars as pop culture. "Those ewoks are so cute!!"

What I also learned about hiring my room is that everyone’s fandom was very different. No one had the same experience with Star Wars. There were people like myself that were like later-in-life [Dave] Filoni acolytes. I literally had one writer that was like, “I have never seen any of them. I’ve never seen any Star Wars media.” And she’s texting me before we started the room, she’s like, “Luke and Leia are brother and sister, what the…?” [Laughs.] And it was so great, because I would really love to know from someone who is not fully immersed in this fandom, what do you think about the pitch we just made? So while she did her due diligence and did a lot of background work and research, at the same time, she was somebody that we would kind of talk to and say, “Okay, so if we take all the kind of signifiers out of it, and this is Star Wars version of X, what does it mean to you?” She would be able to give some feedback: “Well, I’m kind of wondering what’s going on with this character. And in this scene, I’m wondering why so-and-so isn’t saying this.”

I am a fan of Andor but still worry about who they tap for these projects. Its fine, we'll watch and see. A mix is OK provided the "veterans" who get it have more control than the noobs. At least to some degree.

As seen in the post below I quoted - When the new writers main objective is "repruhzuntashun" and like nothing else..... it doesnt bode well for the show. Thats what we are talking about here.

Love to have a good plot, story & characters if thats not too much trouble. I remain somewhat excited about this show due to the time frame it covers. However, as always, one needs to have a finger on the Eject button ready if they screw it up.

Also Tony Gilroy doesn't seem to care for Star Wars at all and he made the best live action ST show so far. Honestly this news has me more excited for the show. Fans of franchises running said franchise always seems to result in a more middling product. And that's a problem because it happens more often nowadays.

You need a mix of both. I have found that people who are knee deep in stuff, have a problem with things moving forward. A good example is Spider-Man being married to Mary Jane. You also have newer people with ideas that do not fit, for example Spider-Man having organic web shooters. Each has to keep the other honest and challenging ideas.

Rogue One and Andor worked because Tony Gilroy also has more experience with genre filmmaking and writing. Storytelling and genre sensibilities are most important.

Not when the person posting things like that is trying to get a reaction. We should all search out full quotes, not screenshots of certain sections that is trying to create outrage. The funny part is that article is 2 years old.
