I still have my UK copy on pre-order from Zavvi (the original print run of 1000 copies with the soundtrack CD). I can be the test guinea pig to see if it's Region B locked via playing it on my NA Xbox One S.

Does anybody have any experience in changing a delivery address with Zavvi? I got in contact with them and they said they can't do that, but surely they can if it hasn't been dispatched yet?

$62.99 with 10% off discount code CYBER today @ deepdiscount.com

Kind of tempting buy one just so that I can say that I own a region locked UHD, but I already own three editions of the film (JP UHD+BD, IT BD, the atrociously bad NL BD)

Thanks! Just for my understanding, the main BD you get in the US, which one is that? Is that the bad one? I'm wavering between getting the 4K and Blu-ray. If the 4K really is a bunch better I think I'll go with it.

The BD included looks really good. The Italian Dynit Blu-ray is a bit better encoded, but there's zero English support, so it's not an option for most. As for the UHD... it does have a good deal of artificial sharpening applied, but it has better compression due to over double the bitrate of the included BD, and doesn't have an LPF applied (I don't think the US BD has an LPF applied, but it for sure isn't on the UHD).

The HDR is "fake," not because of nit count, but that the film was originally composited in SDR (and in 1920x1080p), thus this is a faux-HDR pass, but it apparently looks really good, and comparisons between the BD and UHD show it.

The other main reason to get the 4K is for the collector's edition contents, with the 100+ book from the Japanese CE fully translated into English, and a fully subtitled "making of" documentary, which is awfully rare for anime (and especially 90 minutes long like this one!).

Thanks for the honest description about the 4K and the BDs, I really appreciate it.

(And tbh I've been wanting the 4K but in a way almost was looking for permission to feel OK about that. I think I'm leaning that way now though

US 1080p BD doesn't have the low pass filter and so it retains more detail than the JP 1080p BD.

US GKIDS BD

Figures... I'm thinking mine have gotten lost, but I'd need to get a refund from that to get a new one. I got mine from rightstuf, was supposed to be here Friday... but now I'm wondering if it's gotten lost. Tracking hasn't updated since the 28th just saying "Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way. It is currently in transit to the next facility."

The problem with that is that on the 24th it was leaving Atlanta, and when it leaves Atlanta it's in Birmingham (AL) the next day, and depending on what time it arrives there, I get it the same day or the day after... It shouldn't have taken this long, even with the influx of BF packages.

Waiting for this is painful even if it’s less than a week

Finally got this in the mail today, I know it's a busy time of year for the postal service, but still just seems like it should've been here sooner since leaving Atlanta usually means I get it the next day or the day after that... but whatever.

Movie was good, not as good as Your Name IMO and ends more abruptly, but I liked it well enough to not regret the price too awful much.

It is odd that the subtitles for the signs/songs isn't automatic like with most other dubs, and you can't even turn it on in the settings... you have to manually do it by clicking your subs button until it gets to 8 or 9. I guess maybe since it's not sign heavy and basically just random online posts that didn't really matter, they didn't see the need to do it. The stuff at the beginning with Hodaka asking about a job would make that part a little easier to understand, otherwise it's like he's just randomly homeless.

It's also weird that the normal cover mentions the actors it does because while they may be the recognizable names, they weren't really around much, especially Riz Ahmed.

Another release day, another lack of shipping. Guessing this has been delayed for the third time.

That's what you get when you don't watch foreign films the way they were meant to be seen (original language with subtitles)...

I heard it's supposed to ship out "the week of 14 December" or something like that, apparently.

That doesn't excuse a clear oversight in the subtitle programming. The songs and signs track is supposed to turn on automatically when the dub is selected, not be hidden and only usable by toggling through a list.

As someone that cares a lot about media preservation and artistic integrity I also prefer the original language audio on any media when available, but a lot of people prefer dubs for both entertainment and accessibility purposes and if it's on the disc, it should work properly.

That is unusual, to say the least. Though, considering the number of "text and music" tracks on there (there's one which does translate the music, and one that doesn't), there should be an option to choose which subtitle track does which.

But, this is Shout Factory we're talking about here. It's not like they know how to do this at all...

Yeah, somebody being a sub snob isn't going to have any affect on me. Is this just a thing that happens with anime where people get so worked up and talk down to somebody who prefers a dub or do people also think somebody from say Germany should only be watching English-language animation like Pixar in English with German subs? Strictly speaking, a foreign film is probably only meant to seen by the people in that country that speak that language... They probably don't care about who outside of that watches it.

I want to watch a movie, not read it. Otherwise I feel like I'm missing out on the imagery to read the subs or I'm not getting a full understanding of what's being said or missing dialogue by rushing to read in order to watch what's actually happening in the video. You watch how you want, let others watch how they want.

The setup menu has an option to translate the lyrics, but has nothing to select a signs/songs sub. Just the normal dialogue subs.

Interesting. So if you do select the option to translate lyrics, are the songs subtitled while the on-screen text is still untranslated?

Believe I can clarify this.

Subs for text/signs are activated automatically when selecting either the English SDH, or the English Original Language track. The separate sub track for songs/lyrics does not affect it.

When activating the subs for the lyrics - text and music are translated at the same time.

[Show spoiler]
That's in the Japanese audio though. With the English dub, it doesn't automatically start. It lets you pick normal or SDH in the setup but if you're watching the dub, you might not want subs of the actual dialogue.

I didn't test the lyrics option last night, I finished the movie and it was late so I went to bed after posting that... but I tried it now. There are 4 English sub option, two for SDH which seem to be dubtitles as it says exactly what they're saying and 2 are the original English subs it seems. Those all have the signs, but also have the dialogue. Then 5 is Spanish, and 6 and 10 are French. Then 7 is another English sub which has no signs but has the lyrics, then 8 (which is activated by the lyrics option) has signs and songs and 9 has signs and no songs.

So basically the option for lyrics either triggers the wrong sub (8 instead of 7) or they left off the description that it's lyrics AND signs, not just lyrics. It's still an oversight that there's no wording or option anywhere to know what sub track is just signs since it doesn't play automatically with the dub.
