Until now I'm firmly convinced it was WB's idea, much more than PJ's to make it 3 films. I've also suspected they weren't exactly thrilled that GDT was the director, and weren't "too disappointed" that he quit.

Given how quickly they move through the book, I like Peter Jackson’s take on it for the sake of them being movies. But rather than a “stretched out, padded mess” I see them being able to take their time and flesh out the world, characters, and story, as well as adapt moments that were alluded to in the LotR book / appendices that happened during the events of The Hobbit to the big screen. Plus, do people realize how incredibly anticlimactic it would’ve been to not even see the Battle of the Five Armies?

I know it’s not as much “fun” to see things the way I do, but that really is how I choose to look at these. They’re not perfect, but as I’ve said countless times, none of the movies (besides Fellowship of the Ring ) are perfect. I love them all, but you can definitely find issues in them as well.

Watch it again then. A number of the dwarves looked unique and were played with great personality.

They didn't really do that though. Instead we got overly long video game action sequences with ninja robot Navy SEAL Legolas.

The world was already fleshed out more or less in the LOTR trilogy.

They were, for lack of a better word, boring. It would have been a lot better with two films IMO. The climax of the first being the arrival at The Lonely Mountain, two starts off with Smaug and climaxes with the Battle of the Five Armies.

Anyone else get the feeling we'll have an official announcement by the end of the night? Multiple international shop sites are starting to list this item, and perhaps the most telling clue is the order date of 8/20 from this website, which was (I believe) the impetus for this thread:

https://yes.b2bwave.com/products/view/132113

EDIT: I would also bet all the LOTR editions I already own that the artwork that people think is a placeholder is actually the real thing.

Really hoping for an announcement soon. Like by end of the month.

It would really be discourteous of Warner Bros not to do so. Then again, they have Dragon Sickness, so we can't expect too much of them.

It's gotta be tonight though.

Is there a specific time of day when Warner usually makes their press releases? I'm kind of new to this game.

I really hope the official announcement is today. I eagerly await the transition from complaining about what we think the set will be like to complaining about the actual set.

Do you have any evidence or reason to believe that it will be today, or are you just as desperate as I am for news?

With the original 4K sets coming in at around $100 each ($120 for the steelbooks) I've been thinking all along that this would run in the $200-250 range too. The Skywalker Saga set cost that much as well and that package was kinda crappy. Hopefully this package will be nicer and if it has some sort of figure/sculpture with it then even better.

If the October date is accurate. Would it be unusual to leave it this late before official announcment and preorders?

I've seen multiple international sites claiming that this will be a 51-disc edition with 9 bonus Blu-rays from The Hobbit and 12 bonus DVDs from The Lord of the Rings (presumably meaning all previously released content except for ditching either the Costa Botes documentaries or the original theatrical LOTR special features). I find this highly unlikely, however. The rumors have said 31 discs for a long time, not to mention the fact that we have a credible picture of the set.

Maybe The Hobbit will get its remastered Blu-rays released separately, as well as LOTR, and that's where the misinformation is coming from?

Either way, I'm really hoping for an official announcement soon; at this rate, it's a race to see which will be released first: this UCE, LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga, or The Winds of Winter.

No interest whatsoever having DVDs in a premium set in 2021. Same for bluray copys in a 4k set save for bonus content. 51 disc set sounds like a distant dream, this could still end up not happening or turn out very different from all the rumors, nothing solid so far out there.
