Also, have you tried replacing the hard drive in the PS3 yet?
The eBay seller has good reviews. A good mix of "it works now" and "they couldn't fix it, but gave me a full refund".

I'm leaning that way...

Didn't work for me.

EDIT: didn't replace. Just ran it without the drive.
I haven't tried running my PS3 without its hard drive so I'm not too sure what the result would be.

Well, how much very important data that you don't have backed up already would you be losing? Is it worth potentially never seeing your PS3 again?

I have some game saves (MGS4) for example. But I wouldnt mind playing from the beginning anyways.

Anything else is saved online, like COD5.

Well once they potentially release a trophy patch for MGS4, you'll have to start over anyway.

I just called the store that has the ebay listing.

Knowledgeable gentleman knew all about my issue without me saying much.

Said he has a 90% success rate(which includes saving data on the hdd)

I asked him if they would service it even though I opened the case. He said "I don't care if you mod'd it, painted it a different color, etc, we'll take a look and most likely fix it". Also said I would get the game that is stuck inside returned with the PS3.

He spent a good 3-4 minutes with me, I'm feeling pretty confident. Going to send it out today.

I'll be sure to post results...

If you wouldn't mind, try to communicate with him to see exactly what causes it to YLOD and report back here with what he says. Not exactly how he fixes it, but what exactly causes it. I wouldn't want you to try to steal his 'trade secrets' as thats his business.

I'm just curious how this problem occurs and then I can make my own conclusions and possible guide on how to fix it.

I've read that supposedly it is caused by overheating?

I've heard that as well, but I'm wondering where it is overheating and what is damaged to cause it not even to start after it cools down.

He mentioned poor soldering, bad PSUs, to faulty hdds causing the issue. Said its usually a solder job.

Also mentioned he has seen burned up mobos, in which case he cant do anything. (only 10% of the time)

I hope mine just needs the "usual" repair.

same reason I don't want to send to Sony. 60gb model is the best.

I will definitely keep you informed. Shipping it out tonight.

Be sure to send me a PM with his information if it works out as I'll add him to the first post for others to use him as a resource.

I'm sure that he'll communicate to you over the weekend whether or not he can fix it.

However he may not start working on it until Monday.

My understanding is that Sony will send you a refurbished 60gb model if they can't fix yours? I have a problem with my 60gb and I contacted Sony and since I'm out of warranty they said it would cost a flat fee of $149 and they will either fix the problem or replace it with the same model. I specifically asked if they couldn't fix it would I get another 60gb and was told "YES."
