Absolutely nothing about this movie works. The leads are bad, the script is poor, the humor is off and yet....it's entertaining as hell. Nice to see it look and sound so good to boot.

My copy was supposed to delivered be delivered today, as was Demolition Man. Neither arrived. USPS shows my copy of Congo arrived in my city on Friday night and it hasn't updated since. My plan for tonight included Taco Bell, since both films had tie-ins with Taco Bell, and a double feature on my new OLED. Now that plan may have to wait until we get closer to NYE.

Arrived today (along with The Keep hopefully as I'm not home yet).

Edit: Both arrived

My copy arrived a couple of days ago. I was surprised that the package wasn't in shrink wrap. It was surrounded by bubble wrap which was open on one end. There was also some brown paper in the box to keep the package from rolling around. Is this standard for Vinegar Syndrome? This was the first title I'd bought from them, and as I already stated, was surprised the package wasn't in shrink wrap.

Yes, it's standard. For how beautiful their slipcovers & boxes are I do wish they would wrap them like Arrow does. With that being said, I've always received mine pristine.

Watched the 4K tonight, looks great for the most part.

One section has some thin faint vertical lines that wobble slightly. Starts around when they jump out of the plane until just before they reach Zinj). Looks like the negative was scratched on that part. Noticeable but not really distracting. I'll still take that any day over wonky DNR/AI post processing.

Isn't that a huge chunk of the movie? From memory, the jump out of the plane is around the 45 minute mark. They don't get to Zinj for like another 30-35 minutes.

It's barely noticeable most of the time and I probably got the times confused. It wasn't that long, maybe 10-ish minutes? But it was barely noticeable in most scenes unless you look for it. It was more obvious against the sky in the shot when they were coming out of the plane. I can't check it again at the moment, but hopefully I can find some time in a couple days to do a screen grab.

Apparently I'm blind and missed this disclaimer that showed at the start of the movie:

I only noticed them on Reel 3 (~37:20-55:20) and it wasn't constant, and it was much less visible in the jungle/ground scenes.

They don't show up much in screen grabs, but here are a few shots I noticed that had them to varying degrees to show they really aren't that big a deal, just kinda there now and then.

This one is the most prominent I could capture in a screen grab:

I'm very happy with how this looks. I never thought this would get a 4K release, or even a new transfer, so this was a nice surprise.

I loved the book. I used to read all (not all) of Crichton's books, but I never saw the movie Congo. I also loved Sphere, and the movie was just OK. I'd get it in 4k though.

I don't think I've ever noticed the scratches on the DVD nor the blu-ray. Hopefully, the 4k scan didn't enhance them.

Before I started collecting blu-rays I was collecting books and was pleased to find a Congo hardcover even if it is the Book Club edition (not as desirable)

Crichton was a master of modern adventure stories

I used to read all the time. I read the book versions of all my favourite movies like The Crow and The Ninja Turtles... I read Chrichton and my girlfriend in high school showed me the Dark Tower series. Now that im older and have a small kid I just dont have time. I like audio books though because I can listen while I drive. I love movies though and its easier to sit and watch an hour at a time when the kid finally sleeps.

- Newly scanned & restored in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative
Which is why I despise them using this term for every 4K disc release that comes down the pike. A true "restoration" would have digitally erased those scratches.

It's a 4K transfer/remaster. Nothing more and typical for a major 1995 studio film.

So is this title already gone? I was looking on the Vinegar Syndrome website and couldn't find it.
