Not really. Honestly the shot with the tail at the beginning and the distant shots of Godzilla looked pretty bad still.

What is the difference between the 4K Theatrical Release from last week to the original 4k UHD blu-ray Japanese release?

I know the US 4k UHD Blu-Ray version is getting an English dubbed, but is there any other differences?

lol definitely not. probably even more jarring now with the extra detail around it. maybe it'll be less noticeable at home, but in theater blown up on the big screen woof.

Does anyone know if the deluxe edition will be in a proper blu-ray size case or an oversized DVD size package? One of the best things about buying UK release of Minus One, besides having an English dub, was also the proper size package.

This looks like it’s standard GKIDS Collector’s Edition size, so basically BD sized packaging, but no way to truly be 100% till someone has it in hand or they show an unboxing.

Yeah, I can so far only imagines like these on eBay of the Japanese version, which I assume is the same minus English language options. But to really say.

Though, there's always the other argument of waiting for a UK release and hope it will be like the Minus One release. But that's the gamble there. Though this Godzilla isn't as popular as some of the others due to its documentary-news like style. Being more talky than destruction, so it's more for a mature audience. But one should never underestimate Godzilla's 70+ fanbase.

My thought is that most Hideaki Anno releases in Japan use a very similar minimalist design, and the GKIDS US releases are largely matching those. The Collector’s Edition of Evangelion 3.0 + 1.11 should be a very good indicator for how big this release will be, and I’m honestly hoping we get a bunch of other Anno releases from them following the Japanese template, including Shin Ultraman whenever Cleopatra’s distribution deal ends.

Also I really love Shin Godzilla. Probably its biggest flaw for me which is something Minus One did incredibly well, is allot of the characters share really similar silhouettes, probably a realistic choice but I greatly prefer when overall costuming, hair, and makeup combine to make things easier to parse from afar while still looking excellent/believable.

That's most likely due to Minus One doing it's best to not only be a period piece set in 1940's Japan, but also a serious reboot without remake the original. Were as Shin attempts to reboot, but modernize Godzilla for today (2016).

Now what would be interesting is seeing Godzilla set in the Ghost in the Shell world. 2030's, the American Empire, robots with AI, and whatnot. Plus, one could only image what MechaGodzilla would look like and do.

If it's a match for the Japanese release it should be Blu-ray size.

GKIDS website shows back cover art, though it's not high resolution. I don't see the DV logo, though there's something listed after the HDR.

Mock-up doesn't make it clear if the standard has a slip or not. The trailers are listed as extras for it too.

I think that's just the aspect ratio of the presentation (2.39:1)

Well, if I remember correctly, wasn't the intent for the movie to have a sort of documentary-like look and therefore the lack of DV may not be total loss outside of the night attack on the city. Though, of course DV would be more appropriate for future proofing on later TV that support 12 bit.

If it's anything like the Studio Chizu steelbooks GKIDS has also done this might have no chance of having DV at all and just be base HDR10. It would make for a nice surprise if its secretly included but I'm not holding my breath. GKIDS is usually pretty transparent if it has DV or not. GKIDS usually does slips as well but Toho only really started to do them with You're Next so who knows if it'll have one or not.

I would be willing to double dip for this if they upgraded the audio but it looks like it has the same odd 3.1 mix as the current blu. Disappointing.

This must be the only recent Godzilla movie without Dolby Atmos?
