Ah, I see how that could have been misinterpreted. Saying that high resolution is great but alone won't make a phone successful: here are a couple other stills:



big deal being made of the home screen and it's social networking integration. Not so sure I'm keen on that, but could be neat to see realtime weather and emails.

yeah i hate all the crap they put on the home screens now. all i ever want is the time, and easy access to my texts/emails/phone calls

Best part about it is that you can take it all off if you want:



Everythig but that top widget with the time and profile can be removed. You can also swipe left or right to a "privacy screen" that only shows that top bar (but hides it from your boss or gf, for example).

Looks much better in the video. Phone looks good too. It's nice, but it just doesn't do much for me. I can see that damn flip up thing breaking at one point or another. The home screen looks too busy as well. Not sure I like how "dated" the interface looks/feels. It looks like an older phone but we know it's not because the hardware is new.

I dunno. The mobile phone market is flooded with phones. It's only going to get worse.

yea i keep trying to tell people to wait until later in the year. there are 3 new chipsets coming out that are going to blow away anything thats releasing right now.

That's how it always is, though. You keep waiting for the next big thing, you'll be waiting forever. Bunch of 10-12 megapixel phones probably next year. SE Idou looks pretty good, if they don't find a way to screw it up. True innovation tends to be pretty rare.

not waiting for marginal upgrades from 5 mp phones to the 8-12 mp phones makes sense.

but not waiting for the 1ghz processors capable of hd move playback, day long battery life and 3d game's..seems pretty silly

maybe its just me..but if i'm stuck with a phone for 2 years, i'd rather wait for the next gen tech..then get stuck with last gen's junk.

All depends on how well executed a software platform is. With new CPU and hardware, comes a learning curve to optimize one's platform to that. I would hate to be the guinea pig on a brand new snapdragon phone... Especially at the rate the cell phone and even laptop world moves, you know if you're an early adopter youre going to get shafted as the improvements typically don't take effect until the next SKU. If you're lucky you'll see some firmware support from the vendor... but look at how Samsung treated the innov8. One single firmware update. That shouldn't make a prospective customer of the Omnia HD a year later with it's new OMAP 3430 cpu feel particularly comfortable.

Good point on the power. n97 and omnia HD are finally getting 1500mAh batteries. Now back to the CPU... that's the reason Apple had their CPU downclocked from the 600s to 411mhz for the iPhone 3G: battery life.

Analogy: Vista on decently powerful PC hardware versus XP. XP regularly thrashed it. The Vista service packs went a long way towards equalizing that... but now imagine the same hardware with XP SP3 or even Linux.

partially. I've also done the early adopter thing more than once. Acceptable risk when you're a gadget geek, but you get burned now and then, too. State of the art is not a good place to be unless you're prepared to pay too much for diminished returns and know that you'll be outdated soon.

well we're not talking ps2 to ps3 here. so there's not really going to be problems with app's running slowly or needing to program specifically for each processor. from whats been shown so far on the toshiba phone running snapdragon, everything is just faster. it can not only handle video (unlike my smartphone now) it does hd video. windows mobile 6.5 was faster than anything else i've seen it on.

as for phones not getting updates, you can't expect the companies to keep up on that. thats what chef's and forums are for..custom rom's

i think my only complaint still is the redraw from landscape to portrait still takes too long with snapdragon. tho we're looking at a prototype with the toshiba. and i don't think i've seen tegra doing any rotating yet, so we'll see. but aside from that, it looks to be more powerful across the board. and if i could get day long use out of the battery..that'd be incredible and worth the wait in itself

BlackBerry Storm 2 due next month?

Perhaps it should come as no surprise, given the pervasiveness of recent leaks, but word has it that the clickscreen-free BlackBerry Storm 2 could be hitting shelves as early as June, and no later than July. Word comes from Mr. BlackBerryOS.com himself, who got word from an "insider" who has proved reliable in the past. She says the internal deadline for training tech support is end of month, and while such an early followup seems like a bit of a raw deal for original Storm buyers, it doesn't come as too much of a shock. Is it just us, or is this kind of shaping up into a "phone heavy" summer? Maybe it's just the sunstroke.

You had to know we'd see a flurry of iPhone rumors and news as the Apple community reacted to the Pre's official price and launch date, and right on schedule, we've got whispers that Cupertino's next handset will be announced at WWDC, feature an OLED display and a glowing Apple logo, and launch on July 17. There's also a longer list of detailed specs, but for the most part they're just a combination of that matte black casing leak from February and those Chinese specs from last week. So are they the real deal? Well, the source and the site they're on seem a little shaky to us, but the specs themselves don't seem too far-fetched -- OLED screens are getting cheaper and more prevalent, and we're almost certain to see bumps in camera resolution and storage, so even if they are totally made up, we'd venture to guess they're more right than wrong. It's nice to hear the "rumors" but I like to wait and see what REALLY comes out. I am hoping it's a substantial increase in performance, reliability and power.

yeah i think what we've seen so far is about all they're going to do tho. i think they're probably pretty spot on, aside from the glowing apple lol

You know, as cheesy as the glowing apple might sound - it would be cool to have something that flashes/blinks/pulses to let you know what is going on. Like a new txt, mail or the like. Sometimes my phone is flipped over or it's on vibrate.

Sounds completely incremental. Not much reason if you already own a 16GB iPhone 3G. The glowing apple mod has already been done.
