So, interestingly, it seems this new update, 3.10, is the first one to download and install while in standby. I hope this means that game updates will do the same from now on; something they were always meant to do from day one!

I've never had a database rebuild after a shutdown with 3 beeps. Only time I've had them is after a restart from an update these past few times.

I'd like to thank the idiots who put out 3.10!

Somehow they managed to integrate PlayStation Live into every single game you own by adding a "Player Recommends" section as soon as you look at a game's details under the game tile. It's not in anyway related to your friends lists. It's just random video & pictures uploaded to Playstation Live that are now for your viewing pleasure.

So why is this a bad thing?

I've already seen still pictures of spoilers to The Witcher 3 & Life is Strange game. The only action you have is "Submit Grief Report" if you press options button on your controller.

Speechless

When or if do you all think the PS4 will be 4K capable?

Yeah, there is theory that the PS4 could play UHD BD, but Sony say it isn't happening.

I suspect we will see a PS4 slim at next year's E3 with UHD BD support, new design and AC Wifi.

I'd like some of what you're smoking. 4k televisions will be in 2% of homes by the end of the PS4's lifespan. Why dedicate anything to it now? They'll just wait until the next system.

Default System Software Update v3.0

Because Sony is pushing 4K very strongly and next year almost all new sold TVs will be 4K.

I can see 4K being in the PS5 but not sure about future PS4's. Kinda an FU to fans who bought early. I know systems get smaller and I'm fine with that but can't think of any past systems that added a major feature to a new revision. It would be like the PS3 starting out with DVD's and than switching to BD's in the middle and telling early adopters to buy again.

Especially if they start making games on 4K discs and most PS4 owners are left in the dark.

Well if memory serves correct, PS3 added 3D and the ability to decode DTS-HD MA/Dolby True HD during its life cycle.

First was dts-HDMA then 3D.

After having heard a bunch of 20th Century Fox titles on Blu-ray, (1.5mbps lossy) I couldn't wait to download that particular update. My speakers were very happy that day.

Those were updates though that people downloaded. 4K discs will require a new drive which means if you want a 4K capable PS4 you would have to double dip.

Early adopters of any technology ALWAYS get the worst bargain. What are you talking about bc this happens all the time. Why would this be any different? I can do stuff with my iPhone that those that bought last year's model cant. Sony added Bluetooth support to the final PSP models, which meant certain games got Dualshock 3 support. Early adopters didnt get that. They also released an updated PS2 model (PSX) with DVR functionality and latter models of that had PSP support. The NEW 3DS has more powerful specs as well as a second built in nub for controls. Nintendo couldnt just update the firmware on that for early adopters. Ditto on the Gameboy Color and its color feature. Later Xbox 360s featured HDMI ports (as well as wireless N networking), which were absent from the original models. These are just some examples

Besides, 4K support would be about future proofing and support the media industry. It wont have any bearing on games and no gamer would be screwed over by not having it. Lets say they do add it to a future model. Who cares? If they dont, you would still have to go and buy a new device to enjoy 4K media anyway. Double dip and get a PS4 with 4K or dont and keep your PS4 and get a 4K player. Its such a niche market at this point that they arent likely to think of some big backlash.

I see it still having one. Going driveless hasn't worked for Sony in the past and I don't see them taking a gamble on a flagship product.

Look at the backlash and hate MS got when it was just rumored the X1 was going driveless. Sony won't risk it. Maybe PS6. Plus you gotta take into account that not everyone has unlimited bandwidth/good internet. So that would take out a chunk of potential buyers.

What are you basing this on?

For games that are available on both disc and download, 88% of sales are discs.

They'll only release a download-only console when they're sure the entire world is ready for 100gb+ downloads, so not for quite a while. Bear in mind, somewhere they're already working on the PS5 at least in theoretical stages and there's no way they'd be thinking its the time to go disc less. Not with a lot of the world on dial up, capped internet and downright slow internet.
