Gave this disc a spin for the first time last night. It's as if new life was put into it. The improvement in color and range so apparent. I also put in the BD and while it was a great disc, it looks somewhat dull and flat now.

I try to avoid upgrading when I already have a 1080p blu, but Amazon's got the 4k for $9 so why not?

I like the 4K UHD disc. Will be my preferred way of watching this now.

The 'tavern scene' is so good that it's hard to resist going back and playing it again before carrying on watching the rest of the film.

The whole movie looks washed out on the 4k. I prefer the bluray

No, it doesn’t. Something is wrong with your setup.

I concur with the “overcooked HDR” comment above.

What do you propose is wrong with my setup?

(Plenty of other discs look perfect on my oled bravia/panasonic DP-UB820-K 4k player setup.)

I'm no expert but have you tried playing with the HDR Optimizer settings on your Panasonic 4K disc player?

I believe i have it turned off. Doesn’t that mess with the artistic intent of most movies?

No way. The 4K have more vivid colors than the bluray.

Yes it does, and it's best to disable the HDR Optimizer. I have my HDR setting on standard mode, the same as for Dolby Vision.

HDR on colors, like the red dress are fine.
Anything in day light is getting drenched in a bright light that does not look right to me.
It’s just my opinion.
Everyone is allowed their own take on the 4k picture quality.

When I put the bluray in my eyes preferred the return to nuanced shadows and lighting.

The optimizer wouldn't do much here. Only tame some of the highlights if set to 500 nits. It wouldn't affect the overall image. Also, there is nothing wrong with Basterds.

HDR grading for this one is very bright so maybe it just doesn't look right on displays that aren't capable to tonemap this based on 1:1 ratio?
The only disappointment was the greyish blacks which are hardly intentional given they look proper black on the bd.

My impressions about the color: I did not notice a great difference in the palette, however, the faces now present a much more varied range of colors and details and they look more accurate and realistic. Some colors are now much more striking, for example the reds of Nazi flags that shine with great intensity.

The more I think upon this the more it seems like some kind of AI upscale with the Light Cannon™️ turned to maximum, just like Universal did with their UK edition of Looper. (Which now makes me fear somewhat for how they'll treat Ex Machina) But so help me I loved it when applied them Inglourious Basterds

Agree, I check out a couple of scenes today and the Light Cannon doesn't hurt the picture. The transfer is so damn filmic. Great release by Universal.

Received my disc yesterday and checked it out last night. While I like the transfer overall, the brightness is a little too much IMO. Not that it hurts PQ, but it opens up a slight inconsistency: due to recent 4K releases such as The Fog, Heat or (longer ago) The Deer Hunter, I've gotten in the habit to watch my 4K discs with lights off. But this transfer is too bright for me to watch without at least some dim lighting in the room. How do you watch it or what are your thoughts?
This kind of inconsistency was certainly an absolute rarity for SDR content...

Are there any other discs like that?
