Default HD Sub 12 vs PA 120 vs Bic F12

Have any of you guys who bought the Acoustic Audio HD Sub 12 and might also have owned the Premier Acoustics PA 120 or the Vic America F12 at one time, give me an idea, IYO, which is best for 70% movies and 30% music?

Assuming the Bic F 12 is the replacement for BIC Acoustech H-100, all three of these have received great reviews as mid priced subwoofers.

I am really leaning toward getting the PA 120 which seems to be well made. But, I am not 100% sure that's the one I want.

For those of you who have visited my gallery, I sadly announce that my Titanic 1200, after nearly 10 years service died. Yesterday, I discovered that the voice coil was rubbing against the magnet gap after hearing a scraping noise coming from the sub even during non demanding passages. I went over and pushed the speaker cone a little bit and could easily feel it rubbing against the magnet gap. May it RIP now.

I will update my gallery with pics of my new 52" Sony Bravia and the replacement subwoofer.

Ok so my home theater is all hooked up...I got the Y adapter and everything is fine...I think. When I power up the sub it is silent but when I power it down it makes 3 bump noises. Is this normal?

If it only happens when turning off the sub, don't worry.

I've never had a sub do this before so it's hard not to worry. Any clue what this may be?

Well I have the PA120 and the AA HD Sub 12. The PA is a better looking (IMO) than the AA. The PA has a better box and is braced. The AA gets lower and is a little louder than the AA sub. I've only had it a little over a week so only time(and movies) will tell what I REALLY think. But so far I LOVE the PA (i've had it 8 months) and am really liking the AA sub. Hope this helps.

I need to add your name to the list of owners in Post #1. Which model and what color sub did you buy? Also, what other speakers do you have?

It is a good idea to add this information to your signature.

I bought the HD-Sub10 in black. All my speakers are Polk Audio. They would be the CS2 (center), Monitor 60's (front), and Monitor 40's (surrounds).

Thank you. Your name is added. Make sure you read A Guide to Bass Management. It will help you with your setup. Incidentally, Post #2 in that thread has all the information and links for Y adapters.

Let's start a race to Post# 2000. The winner should get a free HD-SUB15.

BD, have you used the speaker wire inputs on the back of the AA subs? Just wondering if they work the same as the RCA jacks. Mine do not, but I wouldn't be surprised if mine were defective due to the jack issues I experienced.

Rwo, I cannot tell you what the Bic or PA sounds like or which if any is better then the AA sub. I can tell you this tho. The AA matches supremely well with the Energys and keeps up with them nicely and vice versa. I use it about the same or more then you will 70/30 or 60/40. While I can say that the AA I have doesn't have the musicality of the Martin Logan Dynamo I drool over at BB, it is defintely right up there with it for Movies. Now the AA for music is actually quiet good. It can be punchy in the bass for sounds/songs with strong bass drums or kickers, I can also roll very well with a strong bass line. It can also make rap sound clean, unlike the trunk ratteling bass coming from a teenagers car. My dad has a 12" JBL paired with his B&W 603s, but I cannot say that it is very good to play music through with his ES5200 Sony. His JBL just doesn't seem to be very musical to me. As far as the JBL in movies it does a pretty good.

IF it helps I listen to a very wide range of music, I love hearing pianos & guitars go through the Energys, but also Alternative is what I grew up on, I like bass from all types, punk, rap, dance, alternative, and clasical. I am just not into country, but even that comes through well on the sub.

I have not used the speaker inputs. I will do that when I get a chance and will report.

Just remember that when you connect the front speaker outputs to the subwoofer's speaker inputs, you must set the front speakers to LARGE and in the receiver's menu, you should say NO to the subwoofer. By doing this, you will redirect all the bass to the front speakers.

Yes, it helps. Also I saw Aramis post in the official PA owners thread which showed the inside thus confirming your comments about having a better box and bracing. Wow, what a difference in quality and construction. Having 1" MDF sides and fully braced won my vote. Not only that, I don't have to add polyfil since BD said the PA-120 probably doesn't need it. Another plus.

I ordered a cherry PA-120 from Amazon.

I finally did this as a favor to you so that you can have peace of mind. It was a lot of work as I have 4 subwoofers in the room and the AA sub is in the back of the room. I disconnected the other three subs, moved the AA sub forward, and placed it next to my front speakers. I ran two set of speaker wires to the left and right speaker inputs and played some music and played a few movies. The bass sound was great and the one subwoofer was able to give good bass sound in my large HT room (20ft x 25ft). I could not tell the difference between the RCA inputs or the speaker inputs. My conclusion is that your sub must be defective or your setup is not correct. Here is what you have to do:
  • Run two set of speaker wires from the front left and right speaker outputs on the back of the receiver and connect them to the left and right speaker inputs on the back of the sub.
  • In the receiver's menu, set the front speakers to LARGE (full-range).
  • In the receiver's menu, set the subwoofer to NO.
  • In the receiver's menu, set the other speakers to SMALL with a crossover of 80Hz or any other appropriate number.
  • With this type of setup, all the LFE and the bass from the small speakers will be directed to the front speakers.
  • You have two options as far as the front speakers are concerned.
    1. Connect the front speakers to the right and left speaker outputs on the back of the subwoofer. Your front speakers will be at the mercy of the crossover inside the subwoofer.
    2. Connect the front speakers simultaneously to the back of the receivers with another set of speaker wires. If you do it this way, your front speakers will be running full-range and there is a possibility of cancellation of some of the bass frequencies that are coming out of the front speakers and the subwoofer.
  • Since the receiver assumes you do not have a subwoofer, you have to adjust the level of the subwoofer with respect to the other speakers by adjusting the dial on the back of the subwoofer. An SPL meter may be helpful.
  • This also applies to the low pass filter for the subwoofer. You must adjust it on the back of the subwoofer.

I thought they decided to make all their subwoofers in black.

Since I managed to make post #2000, The Deep Discount will be sending me three free HD-SUB15 subwoofers in black, cherry, and maple.
