I've never seen spider wraps on Criterion non-box sets before. Some of those aren't even two-disc releases. How strange!

That was my thought. Almost all the items I've seen spidered are on endcaps or on the shelf behind the counter or special display. No reason to wrap a $20 item -- if you have that much of a theft problem it's cheaper and easier just to build a glass cabinet display

Your description of AR is probably accurate for at least a certain section of the populace here.
Sure. Half the real OCD folks I know are germaphobes and wouldn't even touch those cases without 4 sets of gloves (assuming they'd even leave the house right now), much less start organizing them having to deal with cases, shelves, and whatever real or imagined might be inside the cubbyholes.

Others with organizing issues might attempt it, but they don't think they're doing it to help. Most generally hate that they feel like they have to do it, and get zero satisfaction out of it even when they can do it perfectly (from our eyes), but usually would think the near perfectly arranged department was a disaster. At best they feel a vague short lived sense of relief, not Job Well Done. If you approached them - they'd just as likely apologize profusely for the mess they made or reject any praise you might give them.

This is more along the right track. They would organize it perfectly (to most other people's eyes), go to walk away then have second thoughts, turn around and try to re-organize it all over again, then turn to leave and a few steps later have doubts and turn around and try to organize it again, repeating these behaviours several times over feeling more and more frustrated each time that they can't get it right, even though they actually are, and either break down and cry out of sheer frustration, or feel the need to take the entire lot of blu-rays, throw them in the garbage and get an entire new set to organize properly all over again, fully aware the entire time how irrational what they are doing actually is.

Also seems to be a bit of a setup.

No idea if the original poster took the pic or re-posted it, but it almost looks like someone intentionally screwed up the display just for the sake of a picture then likely fixed it before leaving. Or even caught an employee in the middle on reorganizing the display and thought it make a funny Internet picture.

None of my stores would ever be allowed to look like that -- not the clearance books, not the Media Dept, not the Kids Dept. Even my personal nemesis who is the worst manager I've ever encountered would NEVER have allowed that in any post sale, pre opening, end of Sunday night, or firing an employee on the spot for having his shirt tucked improperly and watching him 'reorganize' on the way out the door.
Realizing every store and regional situation is different than mine -- so maybe this is an absolute legit pic of the way their store looks all the time

I think it would make a nice art installation just made up of war films.

I think most of the times OCD is brought up casually/informally, it isn’t examining the diagnostic criteria, or a reflection of the real condition. It’s shorthand that’s definitely harmful. However as an autistic person I think some of my organisational methods, desires for perfectly aligned covers with no marks (ultimately it shouldn’t matter), flipping covers, checking through page counts in booklets, stems from that. Similarly, I believe some of these traits can be seen in ADHD.

I'm going to make a very strong guess that a tiny fraction of the forum members here have any version of OCD.

OTOH, an extremely high proportion have an insufferable level of Anal Retentive traits one of which of course is the irritating tendency to nitpick and correct others misuse of terminology.

A quick difference in this specific situation

The OCD customer would likely organize it, then reorganize it by size/ht/alphabet, then get extremely agitated at the Spiders which make the shelves uneven, and the discs not sit straight, then do it again until realizing it's impossible and feel awful that they wasted so much time without even knowing why and not accomplishing anything and slink away embarrassed.

The AR person would organize it the way they wanted it to look (b/c it's obviously superior) regardless of whether BN wanted it organized by some other criteria, then run get the manager and employee and let them know how great the place is now set up demanding to be praised for their superior abilities and intellect. Then they'd walk out of the store either feeling quite superior or angry at those inferior dolts/idiots who work at BN for not praising or rewarding him enough and run to an internet forum to ANNOUNCE his greatness and diminish all Retail Employees as Low IQ human rot for being so clueless.
Hariseldon, I didn't even consider this pic might have been staged or a setup just to get reaction from people like us on these forums.

If that's the case, and it may very well be, he/she accomplished that very successfully.

As for OCD, I know for sure I have a mild case of it, at least that's what my dad confirmed for me (he was a psychiatrist).

I got a bit of a (guilty) laugh at the descriptions you wrote for both OCD and AR. Yeah, I'm ashamed of myself for finding any of this amusing but then again since I suffer from some form of mild OCD, I think I'm allowed to feel the way I feel at the moment. Sometimes when I'm in B&N stores and I flip through the Criterions, I have to make sure I re-flip some of the titles back to their original standing positions because it will bother me that some are hanging down and not upright. I never leave a store embarrassed though, unless I'm with an older buddy of mine in his 50s, who gawks at girls and says out loud: "Damn, look at the ass on that girl!". (some of my friends have trouble finding dates).

AR people remind me of egotistical narcissists. I get annoyed at people who constantly look to "correct" others if they use the wrong terms/phrases. Old Biff from Back to the Future did that to his younger self after he said "Make like a tree and get out of here.".... It's LEAVE, you idiot! "Make like a tree and leave!" You sound like a damn fool when you're saying it wrong!" I guess he was anal-retentive too.

I probably am a complete psychopath for saying this but I actually don't care about spider-wraps. In fact, the Barnes and Nobles I go to never uses it since they rarely have any boxsets and even then it doesn't look bad. Maybe it can be a bit bad when a tight spider wrap that squished it a little but I don't think spider wraps are that bad at all. Still, it definitely makes it harder to see the information on the back.

Excited to get into the November Barnes and Noble sale as I just got my friend, who knows nothing about films at all, into the Criterion Collection and he just started his collection off with Marriage Story. Very excited to go with him and see what other films he picks!

I was just thinking also, perhaps the spider wrap was extra protection from Spiderman himself.

I'll make a bet that there's a better chance of spotting Batman in public than Spiderman though.

1) But did your Mother take you to the specialist in Houston for the referral

I get so worried about Blu-ray cases being damaged, it's such a serious problem.

Something I posted two years ago, just after the November 50% Criterion event had started:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...stcount=181192

I was in the same store yesterday and asked a manager if he had confirmation of a sale/dates for this November. He said he didn't. I politely mentioned that it seemed strange not to know anything potentially so close to a sale, and got a withering look in return. Ah, well. We'll find out soon enough.

Looking forward to the November BN sale. I wasn't ready for Criterion's Flash Sale this month, but early November, I'm ready! On my list: Parasite, L'argent, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Claudine. Maybe Beau Travail.

Is that a reference from a film or song I don't know about regarding taking someone "to the specialist in Houston for the referral"?

Variation on running joke in Big Bang Theory about Sheldon

Virtually everyone at some point: Sheldon, you're crazy
Sheldon: I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

Later in the series when Mary Cooper comes to visit:
Leonard: You're talking like a crazy person.
Mary: Actually, I had him tested as a child. Doctor says he's fine.
Sheldon: Told ya.
Mary Cooper: Although, I do regret not following up with that specialist in Houston.
