no having a good day...

first, my laptop craps out on me...now, my fat PS3 YLOD on me...again!

First time was December 3rd. Used JD's reflow service that was recommended on this thread, and got it back end of December. Worked like a charm ever since...until today. YLOD again. Backed up the files that my system would allow me to just the other day, thank god.

Now I have to figure out what the heck I want to do. Send it back again to JD's, and wait for it YLOD for a thir time, or just cut my losses and go buy a slim.

I just hate losing my backwards compatibility...

no reply? Looking for sugestions/feedback.

Also, as a side note, is there a nationwide PS3 shortage or something? I went looking to buy a 120 gb pse or 250 gb ps3, and I could not find a single one at my local target, gamestop(s), best buy, etc. What's going on? Have I just been living in the dark?

It seems that eventually the YLOD always rears its head, so i'd advise to get a new machine.

I had a B/C model and after my second YLOD got a 160gb replacement from Sony because I hadn't used it for PS2 games since 2007. I'm sure you could get a cheap PS2 on ebay?

Personally I'd recommend buying a new one. In my experience BC isn't nearly as important a feature as most people make it out to be, but even if BC is that important for you, I'm sure you still have a PS2 lying around somewhere.

I ordered mine through Amazon sometime last week and received it on Thursday. I recommend keeping your eyes peeled on Amazon.

I still agree with Sony's original marketing talking points against the 360. BC IS important to me. Unfortunately, Sony don't care anymore.

Yeah, I remember Sony talking about how important of a feature the BC was back before the PS3 launch. I really don't want to lose that feature...

I went out of town leaving my ps3 to my wife... and now she calls me because the ps3 starts with a red screen saying that it has a major error and to call sony tech support...

Its my 3 ps3... I'm not very lucky... I don't understand I keep it clean, its in an open space, no carpet... and still 3 ps3... first the lunch 60G ps3 with YLOD, second an 80G with no BC bluray player dead and now my other 80G no BC with that red screen...

anyway, I'll call sony when I'll be home, but anyone have an idea about that red screen? a quick search on google didnt help much.

Edit : I've tried all option of safe mode without success, so I've contacted Sony, and they've asked to send it to them.

Well my 80GB MGS4 bundle just YLOD on me tonight while watching 2012! I freaking knew it was gonna happen! It sucks to KNOW something is just WAITING to break down. I think i'm gonna go buy a slim tomorrow. I use my ps3 way to much to go even a day without one. At least my Phat 80GB console lasted me almost 2 years.

So Sony is still denying they made a product that will definitely break down at some point in the first 2-3 years?

Is there something for Canada? Does Sony Canada fixes them? Or is it all sent to Sony of America?

I'm gonna buy a slim tomorrow and send mine out to get fixed because i love my phat one! With it's BC (which i never use but still!) and it's 4 USB ports and way sexier design!

UGH! Sucks so much i'm so pissed off right now, and i went on youtube and typed YLOD and there's so many people that had theirs die! Sony MUST do something about this...

How did you know it was going to die? I've had my PS3 for 2 and a half years now (I have the 80GB MotorStorm bundle) and I'm afraid mine will probably break soon because most people that have had their PS3 die have had the 40/60/80GB models.

DAMN!!! My launch 60gig just YLOD last night during FF13. When it happened, I thought power was lost to my house. Everything else was still running. Luckily, the next time I started the machine, it turned on and I immediately took the game out. About 30 seconds after that, it YLOD again, and I havent been able to turn it on since.

My question is I removed my 320g hard drive and put back the 60g original. If I buy a new slim and put the 320g hard drive will it be business as usual or will it prompt a re-format? Obviously I had no time for a backup of my files.

Even though i'm extremely pissed, I do have to admit that I've had it since Oct 06 (i believe) and probably averaged 20 hours a week (sometimes maybe 35 when I was between work) so it's in no way a defective machine (in general). Same thing happened with my PS2 right around the 4-5 year mark as well, now that I think about it.

I'm just pissed if I lose my saves with Heavy Rain, FF13, etc. I only had 2 trophies left in Heavy Rain

So i got my new slim today, sucks that i have to 'downgrade' like that but oh well, having a PS3 is better than having none.

I think i'm gonna try to fix the YLOD myself, i mean my PS3 is definitely dead right? so might as well play around with it no? There's lots of videos on youtube on how to do it. Even if it's not permanent i'll at least be able to fully transfer everything from my 80GB one to my new 120GB Slim. And it would be nice to get my 2012 blu-ray out of there! I was watching it when it died. i wasn't even halfway through yet!

So i guess i'll have a new PS3 and a hopefully fixed PS3, can't be that bad to have two right? Just need to buy another tv at some point heh

So i spent about 500$ on the MGS4 bundle 2 years ago i'm spending another 350$ for a new slim. So Sony has made almost 900$ from me... Same thing happened to my PS2 YEARS ago, except at least it was after 4-5 years and not just 2-3 years for the PS3. So in my gaming life i've purchased two PS2s and two PS3... awesome! lol

Ever since the YLOD stuff came up I've been very paranoid about my MGS4 80gb breaking down. Sometimes I feel like I should trade it in for a slim, but I DO use the bc on it.

Would it be worth it for me to open up the ps3 and clean it out?

Lie.

If there was over 50% failure rate on these models there would be A LOT more reports of failure, massive media coverage. It's simply not true, not even close.

Wish people would think before making such ridiculous claims.
