The PS3 was considered one of the best Blu ray players when it came out.

You guys hang on to all these stats on Disc sales, but in reality they are on the way out. All the major Studios and Providers are going Streaming, even though EST doesn't show this. You guys are left with two 4K Players, Panasonic and Pioneer, I know also the PS5 but that's for gaming not a Quality Player and maybe coming out in the 4th Qtr. I'll bank on Streaming from a Server over Fiber!

What? The Playstation console, starting with the PS3, has always been a quality player. So much so that Criterion would use the PS3 for QC purposes at their offices. The PS4 is also fantastic. The PS5 will be great because it will be reverse compatible with the PS4 and will also be 4K native.

Indeed. Fair enough, the PS2 was a pretty bog standard DVD player but that all changed with the next gen consoles. You also didn’t get any firmware issues and both the PS3 and PS4 handled 3D content very well to boot. (Still important for some of us).

Great stuff. I’m buying for sure, although not at launch. Waiting a year.

I was asked if I wanted to write a article back when it was Home Media Magazine. They were nice staff, not sure if it’s a new team or not but I used to read that website a lot.

I'm going Day 1. Especially at the rumored $399 USD pricepoint. We'll see, though.

I think launch titles will be weak. I also have loads of stuff in VR and through PS Plus I need to play. I’m in no rush.

Honestly, I don’t think we have a hope of it being less than £450. Probably £499.

I bought my "fat" PS3 in 2007 and it is still working perfectly to this day. It has been an absolutely faithful and superb blu-ray player. The fact that it was updated via firmware years later to support 3D playback is another testimony to both its quality and to the long term support that it received from Sony.

I have every confidence that the upcoming Playstation 5 will include a great 4K disc drive. The only person here on these forums who has cast any aspersions to the contrary has never owned any 4K disc player and is well known to be a complete and total idiot.

I also own a working Playstation 1. Both it and my PS3 are quite old now, but they have each stood the test of time as high quality reliable devices.

I plan to acquire to buy a PS5 if for no other reason than to show my support for Sony's decision to include a 4K disc drive. I alsways seem to wind up with the odd numbered models. I think it will make for an excellent additional 4K disc player as well as a fun gaming console. I might even dip my toes into the VR waters once I have it.

If Cyberpunk 2077 is optimized or mastered for PS5 - I will be happy. That was my most anticipated title for PS4 before it got pushed back to, coincidentally, September, which is the rumored debut date for PS5.

Same here. I have it in my bedroom. I use it for 3D titles occasionally or Blu-ray tv series when I fancy watching something in bed.

VR is fantastic and I’m looking forward to next gen.

A very nice article. I enjoyed reading about other people who value the higher quality, the immensely better selection, and the unchangeable ownership that only physical media offers.

The story where one disc collector watched a documentary about the legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune on Netflix only to discover that Netflix did not offer a single one of his movies to watch underscores just how pathetic the selection of classic cinema is on the major streaming services. Our wonderful global film heritage is largely absent from the major subscription streaming services, but, thankfully, it is well represented on physical media.

It was also nice to read about the young community college student who buys physical media because he recognizes its greater value. He already owns 1,639 titles on disc! He succinctly had this to say:

"I have a huge passion for films."

It is refreshing to see this passion shared across the generations.

It’s when it crosses from a hobby to a life long passion. I couldn’t exist without it, it’s that simple. I need it in my life. Can’t imagine what it would be like if film didn’t exist. I think that’s why I’m so concerned about all this climate business. I actually got a headache from watching that video I was telling you about.

You really worry too much.

We have the technology to produce energy from clean renewable sources and we have had it for quite some time. All that is lacking is the societal will to adopt it on a larger scale. Clean power is ready and waiting for us.
