If I want to pick up a copy of Dersu Uzala, what's currently the best option (including SD)?

I see there are Italian and Spanish BD releases, but no idea if they're official - especially the Spanish.

Of course, it may already be part of the mythical Criterion Kurosawa BD box set...

If you're a big fan of these films, better keep those DVDs 'cause Dracula doesn't have a commentary included and I don't think Frankenstein will have a commentary either.

I was curating my wish list for the upcoming Barnes & Noble sale when I noticed that the Zatoichi box set doesn't seem to exist on the site anymore. A search redirects me to the Takeshi Kitano Zatoichi, and there aren't any other entries. Am I just blind? Or is this one I'll have to hunt through a store for?

It was OOS at Criterion for a long time:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=873

The B&N site has always been wonky on Criterion listings; I imagine they took it down during the long period it was unavailable. It may be back up during the sale, or you may have to go into a store to enquire about ordering (I used to place in-store orders frequently during the 50% sales).

I just thought of two good titles for Criterion to get their hands on:

Carlos Reygedes's 'Silent Light' from 2007,

and Alan Rudolph's 'Choose Me' from 1984. One popular one I would like is Kubrick's Lolita as well.

The Spanish is legit for once! A Contracorriente Films are for real. Only Spanish and Galician subs, in case that's an issue.

Can anyone give me a brief rundown on what we know about this Kurosawa set? I hear it alluded to fairly regularly as if it's something we know is coming, but I've never really heard any explanation of how we know that.

There is no Kurosawa set. It's never been announced or even hinted at, but that's not stopping a few users on here from saying that it's coming.

I'm surprised Criterion hasn't done an Amos Poe compilation or something for Bette Gordon. I was watching Blank City last night and it seems that they could do a collection of that whole East Village scene. They already took care of early Jarmusch, wonder why they haven't touched on the other members of No Wave Cinema.

Who would have the rights to Fritz Lang’s Fury? I’d love for that to get a Blu release!

It wasn't a problem for Zatoichi!

Warner Brothers own the rights to it, and it's kinda strange that Warner Archive haven't bothered to release it yet.

I just saw that a restored version of The Double Life of Veronique will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

A restored version of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s The Double Life Of Véronique to be shown in the Cannes Classics section at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival

La Double vie de Véronique (The Double Life of Véronique) by Krzysztof Kieślowski
(1991, 1h38, France / Poland)
Presented by MK2. Restoration carried out by Hiventy from the original negative in 4K, supervised by director of photography Sławomir Idziak. Theatrical distribution in France by Potemkine.
Actress Irčne Jacob in attendance

I hope this means we'll get a UHD eventually - if not from Criterion, then from someone.

^I believe Michael Brooke once said that Polish rights-holders were asking unreasonable amounts of money for home video rights, making it unviable in terms of sales returns for boutique labels.

Does that sale have a start date locked in yet?

I know that it usually starts the first week of July.

But no thread yet from hariseldon.

…aka Gandalf.

Faya Dayi, another title that has been confirmed as coming from Criterion, is listed on Janus's website now.

Aclea (I think it was) has said that the elements for Fury need a lot of work before it can come to blu-ray. Undoubtedly the same is true for Lang's other Warner-owned still-unreleased-on-blu-ray title, Clash by Night.

Almost 13 years since Criterion went blu.

Which existing spines do you think need to be upgraded most?

Taking a cursory look at the collection, a few spines that standout for me:

-Kurosawa: Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, Red Beard
-Onibaba
-The Adventures of Antoine Doinel
-Ozu: Early Summer, A Story of Floating Weeds, etc
-The Spirit of the Beehive
-Summertime
-Spellbound
-The Tales of Hoffmann
-The Thief of Bagdad
-Thieves' Highway
-Youth of the Beast
-Z
