I recently watched the Mi4K Spider-Man 2 and found that in some scenes, certain issues (mostly gamma, contrast, or exposure related) were pretty distracting and a bit of an annoyance.
I'd never watched the original blu-ray of SM2, so I ordered it and just had a chance to check it out and make comparisons. Each one is imperfect, though I found myself never really distracted while watching the original blu-ray. It seems like Sony just changed a bunch settings on the Mi4K version simply to make it look different, but most often those changes looked much worse. As it stands I'll be getting rid of the Mi4K disc and holding onto the original. I had much higher hopes after being so thoroughly impressed with what Sony did with the original Spider-Man Mi4K version. I'm looking forward to receiving Pineapple Express and doing some comparisons with the previous release within the next week or two. |

The film shouldn't have even have been called Godzilla, it's a completely different creature. |

As odd as it seems, out of all of the Mi4K releases, that is the one I am most interested in checking out. I used to have the original, but had to sell off a lot of my BDs to pay some bills a while back and have been holding off on rebuying it until I get a chance to compare it to the new one. I know the new one won't have any extras, but I generally don't watch them much anyway. Also, I don't really think the "unrated" cut really added that much to it either.

I think the 4K of Godzilla looks significantly better. Mainly, the way color is handled with regards to shadow is very natural on the 4K as opposed to very digital on the old release -- and it used to look digital in a way that seems very specific to Sony Blu-Rays. Like the contrast in Ghostbusters, in terms of any individual screencap, it's a minor flaw, but it does affect 100% of the movie.

The colour timing and contrast/brightness is better in the new edition. Detailwise they're both very similar though. It's kind of like the two Ghostbusters Blu-Ray transfers, except the difference was much larger and more noticeable with that film. ![]() |

While Spider-Man had the Dolby TrueHD track re-used, Spider-Man 2 actually has the DTS-HD Master Audio track. I haven't noticed if anyone has mentioned this yet but I thought some of you might be interested (though I see it has already been updated in Blu-ray.com's database).

Quick question.
From what I've heard, to truly get the maximum quality out of 4K transfers, you need a really large TV correct? I'm just wondering if I should start buying 4K versions when they're released in case I get a 80+" tv in the future. |

In this case, these are 1080p still just like typical Blu-rays, but sourced from 4K film transfers. It really comes down to screen size and proper seating distance as well as proper calibration to gain benefit. You don't need an 80"+ display by any means to benefit.

These 4K masters are simply 4K downscaled to 2K (1080p) for the BD so it doesn't really matter as long as your display is 1080p and you are sitting close enough. For example, someone with a 50" display should be sitting about 6.5-7' away.

The real benefit only comes when a film's production is done in 4K. Which means, films are scanned and all post production is done with a 4K DI. Or if a movie is shot in 4K (or higher) digitally, a 4K DI is used and finally, distribution in 4K or at least UHDTV format.
Right now, they're not too many movies with this production work flow to really benefit from UHDTV. I would wait until it becomes more common before I invest in one. So for now, 1080p is sufficient. But at the same time, benefit from these 4K mastered releases. |
