Mmmm.
![]() I am really curious what this transfer actually looks like with some quality screen captures. Not whatever this all is. It just looks odd. |

But when it comes to 4K HDR captures, they are always very off. They can help in detail level, but not for colors and the HDR. Tone-mapping HDR to SDR completely screws up colors. Caps can mislead anyone even regarding detail and grain field. Some detail can be clipped away, some of the grain may be clipped, artefacts might be made brighter and more noticeable than they actually are in HDR... |

I think those screenshots look pretty damn good (given that they're obviously compressed).
Not many people have the capabilities to take proper 4K caps, so I'm not surprised that 2 weeks prior to street date we still don't have uncompressed screenshots. Either way, liking the way this looks so far. I saw it in theatres in Feb and thought it looked pretty damn scrubbed so I'm glad that it looks like that's not the case with the actual UHD. |

Just as I thought, some people are still in denial. Jesus, it's almost like you just DON'T want a good transfer. What else do you need? Yes, it's pictures, not screenshots, but it doesn't exactly matter; what, are you gonna tell me now, all that grain and detail and colour is made by the camera?

The phone taking the pic is boosting the colour and adding some sharpening.. that is not real grain. I have seen the dcp and it has been sharpened and dnr'd. It still also has lots of teal and yellow. People have too much faith in Cameron he is a revisionist and loves to tinker.

Someone is denial that those screen shots are unimpressive and just muddy any discussion.
The shot PB selected makes Winslet's shoulder look like someone really fubared the makeup application for the then twenty year old actress. Appears like a still wet spackled ceiling. |

My only recommendation is the DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader channel. This is a normal person just like us who doesn't get free copies and he actually uses his brain and prepares a bit before clicking record ![]() |

My concern is how much of that special flavor of image processing that attenuates certain attributes in an image that initially appears at first glance as more 'detail' but is rather artificial "detail pop" is in the actual new transfer versus real improved detail. Underlying the apparent fact that these are literal screen shots rather than more accurate frame captures.
T2 has this problem. The recent True Lies transfer that has been on some streaming services lately exhibits this problem as well. Time will tell. I am not drawing any conclusive judgements about this transfer until there are some actual frame captures from more established sources. |

Anyway I saw Titanic 25th anniversary screening in IMAX but it was played in 3D, we all know that 3D releases can be de-grained for better 3D effect. I'm quite optimistic for 4k blu-ray and grain preservation as it's not 3D. |

4K Dolby Vision tmos on iTunes. WSome scenes has that Peter Jackson high contrast digital look plus a touch of sharpening. Digismear when character faces moves in the background. Could be the stream or me being tired but will check again later.

If you go to the iTunes store and search a title, if it shows a price then you have SD. You have to buy it again for 4K DV/HDR as only direct HD iTunes purchases/redemptions get upgraded. |

What is up with the grain looking so ugly?
I think they should have used a bit of DNR to clean that up. |
