Yes, cinema as we know it wouldn't be much without either of those two. However, I'd argue that Spielberg has sucked for about 2 decades but, on the other hand, he's not acting like a giant douche. This isn't about abilities as a director. It's about your ability to be a monumental ass-hat to the public and your fan-base. Spielberg isn't that. Coppola isn't that. Hell, I can't think of any other "classic" director (off the top of my head) who is. Just Lucas.

Nope. He very well can. However, like ANY celebrity, once those statement are made, they are free to be judged by the general public. Would we be having this discussion if it were about something a Kardashian said? Speech is speech - the point is the stupidity that lies within

If Lucas doesn't want to be asked about the new movie, then he should go hide in a bunker for 2 months until all of this is over. It's like - if your ex is getting married and you don't want to talk about it or hear about it, you probably don't go hanging out with mutual friends for a while.

The prequels might be crap and have terrible acting but they are still not as bad as Sophia Coppola or The Godfather Part III.

I would also like to see Lucas direct some small films like THX-1138. But then he would just go and rerelease them smeared with CGI to make them look "bigger".

You see nothing wrong. I see a bitter, *****y old man. Our perception is different, clearly. All he does over the last 20 years is ***** about how no one likes his vision....how no one understands him...how all he wants to do is create "artsy, little movies." Funny - why hasn't he made any of them, then?

You see nothing wrong but EVERY. SINGLE. ARTICLE. about that quote has commented about how back-handed and nasty his comment is. If you're ignoring it, you're CHOOSING to ignore it. But, let's be honest: Lucas was probably not going to like the movie regardless of what was put on screen. His ego was bruised because they flat-out told him that they didn't want to use any of his ideas.

Now that response might be a bit unfair and Lucas certainly deserves some criticism, but I think it's incredible how many people who have never accomplished anything of substance in their lives, including many who couldn't pass a high school English exam, expend an inordinate amount of effort bashing Lucas and other filmmakers.

Go make a movie and upload it for us to criticize. See how hard it is to create something that doesn't look and sound like a cheap porno film and that holds someone's interest. All of Lucas' films have their flaws (as does every great film ever made), but he's created worlds and characters that have held up for almost 40 years and people will still be talking about on their 100th anniversaries beginning in 2077.

And I'm no fanboy of either Star Wars or Lucas. I haven't yet bought tickets for the new film. If the reviews are good, I'll see it when the crowds die down. If the reviews are bad, I'll eventually steam it at home.

I agree that he created something truly special, but to say that people shouldn't criticize something if they couldn't do it as well themselves is pretty silly.

All I've seen is the clip from ET of him saying pretty much the exact same thing.

When I saw III theatrically, I was certainly disappointed. But I don't think Sofia was as bad as the rap that she got. She played a rich, over-protected young woman from a very paranoid and insular family. That's how someone like that would behave. I'm not sure that Wynona Ryder would have been much better. What they probably should have done was given Bridget Fonda the role and given Sofia the smaller reporter role.

When I saw III again when the Blu set came out, I liked it much better. One of the things I liked about it was how closely it hewed to actual events at the Vatican. And it's actually a quite beautiful film.

And IMO, the acting in the PT was still worse, even though I believe that the criticisms of Anakin being a paranoid brat are misplaced -- that's exactly the kind of person who would eventually become evil.

As for Coppola, his last great small film was The Conversation.

meh, if he had just said that the fans will like it I could see that as a dig, but he also said he enjoyed it when he didn't need to (has no reason to lie at this point, financially and popularity-wise), so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Doesn't really matter, anyway, Lucas liking the movie or not has no bearing on my enjoyment of it
