I briefly had Night Of The Hunter yesterday, had to return it as the digipack was crushed. Cardboard boxes are fine if you're buying in a shop but easily damaged in the post. I hope Criterion go back to Amarays

It's not like they started making digipacks, then went to plastic, and now are back to making digipacks......

For their multi-disc releases, they use digipacks, and single discs are plastic.....

In regards to Night Of The Hunter..... I watched it with the wife last night.... and in typical fashion, she thought she was in for a nice lengthy feature. When it ended, she said "How long was that?" and I told her it was about an hour and a half.... and she said "What's the second disc?" and I told her.... and long story story short, the wife and I ended up watching the "commentaries and outtakes" until 1:30 AM..... we went through the entire 2h30m feature on the supplements (didn't check out what else was on there, as she was tired when it was over)

What a great package though!

However, there are exceptions to the rule... Breathless is a single disc release packaged in cardboard, which is attributed to the thicker booklet and the prior DVD release being in a wonderful cardboard package.

+1. Both my Night of the Hunter and Seven Samurai arrived via Amazon a little banged up. Not to mention the last 3 non-Criterion discs I ordered that were in paper/cardboard cases - like Bridge on the River Kwai and the Avatar Extended. Never had a plastic case arrived with a caved in corner, or bent edge.

If paper were as sturdy as plastic, then they'd use it to make cars.

Anyone have any thoughts/information as to why Criterion seems to have to interest or plans to release any David Lynch movies in the U.S.? Seems there's a market to fill, but no studio seems to have the balls.

Have you ever heard of Criterion expressing "no interest" in releasing any Lynch films? Maybe they do, and maybe they don't. I've never heard them come out and say either way. I'm sure there are many legalities involved, though, that none of us know anything about when it comes to licensing Lynch films from other studios. Just because Criterion hasn't released certain films by certain directors doesn't mean that they have no interest in doing so.

For sure. Yeah, i have no idea what their plans are, hence the question to the Criterion geeks here at bluray.com. Did they ever release any Lynch on DVD? I just find it odd that no U.S. studio is releasing Region A BD's of his movies, that's all.

If you look at the Wikipedia section for Criterion laserdiscs, it states that both "Blue Velvet" and "The Elephant Man" were announced at one time, yet never released. Both were given spine numbers, but never made it to production. No DVD releases, though.

So did the spine numbers eventually go to another release? Also I find it dumb that the new Ghostbusters Blu-Ray is still missing features from the LaserDisc edition.

No, if you look through the list of Criterion laserdiscs that were released there are missing spine numbers. Not a good situation for the OCD collector, I'm sure.

Also, the features on the Criterion laserdisc of Ghostbusters might have been created exclusively for Criterion. In that case, I think it's rare that Criterion licenses out their own features to the original studios.

They were some different storyboards and animation tests. I'm pretty sure Columbia has them but for some reason didn't feel the need to put them on the new release.

I'm 22, and the first Criterion DVD I bought was RoboCop, although I can't remember how long ago that was. I did know of the Criterion collection, though, and because I didn't know that many titles from the collection, I started with titles I had seen before. So, RoboCop and Monty Python's Life of Brian were probably the first.
By the way, I never understood people unwilling to check out things they don't know. If I'd never done that, I would never have seen any Cassavetes movie, or Bergman, or Fellini, or Kurosawa.

The 1st Criterion Collection film I watched was The Life Aquatic back when it was released on DVD. My 1st Criterion purchase was the Ghostbusters 4-disc LD.

My Videodrome & Cronos both shipped on Thursday, the only downside being that they're a Christmas present from my wife to me so I won't be able to open them for another month
(from Axel Music by the way)

I've never ordered from Axel Music, but do they usually just ship things a week and a half in advance?

Lynch is not popular in the U.S., nor are his films, really. Doesn't mean they aren't good, but they aren't really good in a financial sense for a company if they can't sell copies. I mean, Lost Highway finally came out on DVD just a few years ago, 10 years after it played in theaters (partly because October films went under, so the rights got shuffled around). I assume Blue Velvet and possibly Twin Peaks will hit blu sooner than later... maybe Mulholland Drive. The others, I wouldn't hold your breath, but I could be wrong.

I imported region-free copies of The Elephant Man and Wild at Heart, and both look pretty good barring a full digital clean up.

And Dune is out in region A... and ironically, that's his most "commercial" film.

Cmoooon...Hausu, dark?? It's downright whimsical. Just sayin.
