I didn't know Night of the Hunter and Red Shoes (that was the other one she seen, right?) is even obscure, to top that off, for someone in the film business to even see. But to each his own to go about. For me, come back when she has a post about seeing something I can't find on a top 100 films lists. Thanks. Also, not knocking MEW. She is hot!!!!!!!

And just married...

You do realize the majority of 26 year-old actresses do not watch films like The Red Shoes or Night of the Hunter, let alone get excited for them?

Baby steps, CG, baby steps.

I'm not sure about that. Haven't talked to any 26 year old actresses, that has worked with the master of movie taking (I mean knowledge, I think.) Tarantino. She named one of Hollywood's best films and a top 5 "popular" British film, but being that I don't know one girl who knows these films (let alone guy. I have a small group of friends btw, and brother watches what a normal MTV watcher would), I'll give her some credit.

That's what I was getting at. I guess this obscure film never has been shown before Criterion released it. She is helping young girls who follow her (and some of the posters on here it seems) I guess to atleast look it up on google. lol.

I'd remain skeptical. I mean, have you seen Sasha Grey's myspace? The modern day, plugged in, first world female has an uncanny knack for feigning sophistication. (dodges tomatoes)

That also. But my thing is, Night of the Hunter and Red Shoes (even if it's some of you posters' first time seeing or knowing about them) are not obscure, to think someone in the generation where hipster is mainstream and the fact that she is in the movie business, to think she is watching 2 films in critics' lists of top 100 is shocking?

But also, she could be "ACTING" like she knows these films like you said, even though it isn't "film nerdy" to me to know them.

I hear everything you're saying, though NOTH and Red Shoes (along with Black Narcissus and basically all the P/P collaborations) strike me as belonging to a subgroup of non-obscure/mainstream classics that have a sort of hipster-crossover appeal. Mainstream accolades as you pointed out, but for whatever arbitrary reasons still peaking the interest of those who pride themselves in wallowing in all things ultra-esoteric. I dunno, in recent months I've noticed a lot of hipster types referencing P/P productions - namely The Red Shoes. Maybe it's not a 'thing' at all and pure coincidence; no idea really. As for dear ol' Mary I have no idea what social strata she aligns herself with, though, if it's "hipster" (which, yeah, it probably is), maybe this Red Shoes business kinda ties in with that.

...Or maybe it's just more generalized, and she's a huge Criterion geek. Which would be fabulous obviously.

So I'm definitely thinking about checking out Ride With the Devil. Anyone think it's good enough for a blind buy? Just curious to hear some thoughts on the movie

I watched it on youtube, and I LOVED it. I bought my copy the same day. I would def. recommend it. Amazon may have it on sale. They are having, or were having, a 40% off Criterion sale. I think you should buy it.

I finally got to watch some of my BBS set after being tortured for two days reading through the booklet at my GF's parents house, who don't have a Blu-ray player. I bought it on Wednesday hoping I could watch Five Easy Pieces before we left for our trip, but I had to go to four different stores before I found a copy...and didn't have enough time. But I brought the booklet to prepare for the inevitable boredom, and the fact that I have been excited about this set since its announcment.

What a treat this set is. This is, by far, my favorite thing to come from Criterion since Wings of Desire. So far I have watched Five Easy Pieces and The King of Marvin Gardens and couldn't be happier the way these films look. Tomorrow I will be watching Drive, He Said and A Safe Place for the first time, and will probably save the other films for a future date. I already have the Sony digibook of Easy Rider and I honestly prefer the warmer look of the Sony transfer from what I have seen of the screenshot comparisons on different sites...despite the fact that the Criterion edition has a higher bitrate and is supervised by the director of photography. I am glad to have both at any rate.

It's sad to see that this set is, currently, only in 134 collections. I feel these films have plenty of crossover appeal and may introduce a new audience for Criterion the same way Bottle Rocket, The Thin Red Line and Curious Case did for some people. Hopefully this midpriced box set will entice most of the buyers who wait for ridiculous 50 percent off sales to actually pay what these films are worth

Some of us have to watch what we spend.

I liked it, but it wasn't good enough for me to recommend a blind buy. I'd recommend a rent first.

I'm happy to help. I hope you enjoy it. I'm trying to avoid buying DVD's, but I liked Ride With the Devil so much that I also bought The Ice Storm. I really enjoyed it as well.

Alrighty, well, I didn't get too much feedback on whether I should buy The Seventh Seal, or pick up another Criterion instead, so I'll just get that, hopefully tomorrow.

If you like Ride With the Devil, I'd recommend renting The Ice Storm as well. Just imo. I think it will eventually get a blu ray release. I hope so anyway.
