As far as the stimulus checks go, do only the unemployed get those? I'm still lucky enough to be working during this time. Every site I've read makes it sound like everyone is getting one. I'm not gonna hold my breath.

If people filed a tax return in 2018/2019 and made less than $75K they should be getting one.

No idea if we all have to pay it back next year though.

Classic film noir would look amazing in 4K UHD if properly scanned and restored from OCNs

that's the part i'm wondering about.

i've read one place where it said they were basically being given as gifts and won't have to be filed or be counted as income as part of your taxes, next year. and i've read another that says they will, like they always have.

either way, i'll probably still get a refund next year even with this stimulus payment. i've always gotten a federal refund in the past even with a stimulus the previous year.

Is the stimulus check only for people who have lost their jobs? I'm still employed but I could sure use that $1,200. Also, will it be taxed? Should I expect a check for $766 instead of $1,200?

I would end up owing next year if these are to be paid back. I only get back $800-$1,000 on tax returns.

it's for every citizen who filed a tax return for 2019 (or 2018 if you didn't file for last year...which is why they are saying if you haven't filed, to do so immediately)
unemployed
currently working
drawing unemployment pay
on social security

if you filed a tax return, you're eligible (with caveats).

and in the past, i can't remember if they were taxed, or not. if it is, then it'll be better for your tax return you file next year. if it's not, then it might get added as part of your taxable income and you'd owe taxes on it (or not, see my post above).

also...go here to see how much, if any, you'll be getting.

Even people like myself who live entire off of our Va Disability (me) and SSI (wife).
We'll each get a one time payment of $250, of which I am glad. ( if what I've read is true )

It'll help with the extra Credit Card Bill due to the charges we made preparing to shelter in place

I feel like the cutoff for the stimulus check is just way too low especially for NYC. At $99,000 your income is considered too high for a payment but in NYC that's nothing. I understand cost of living is different everywhere and there's no way they could account for all the variables in such a short amount of time. Still, that sucks.

That being said, I'm know I'm being a whiny b because there are countless people out there who are in pretty dire straits due to this situation. Some have no income now and, sure, rent can be delayed but that doesn't put food on the table.

I'll shut up now.

i think that's why the whole thing with rent/mortgage and student loans came up. they know that with people in places with a high cost of living (nyc, la, etc.) that $1200/$2400 won't go as far as it would for someone who lives somewhere like i do. so they did that whole thing with rent/mortgages and student loans to make the amount given help even more in those places.

i'm sure a lot of people will use it to buy food or pay down debt. but i'm sure there are also a lot of people who will use it to buy other things that might not be a necessity. if i get the full amount, i'm gonna buy some new tires for my truck. they're not absolutely needed right now, but i might not have the money when that time comes. so i'd rather buy them with the extra money than have to save a little bit along the way; which is difficult considering how little i bring home due to insurance, 401k, etc. coming out of my check. obviously the 401k is my money. but that's for future me

It won't be taxed as taxable income. If anything though, it could be a "refund credit", so if you are getting $2,000 next year's refund, it might only be $800.

I don't think they have officially said they're doing that, but could ultimately happen.

My Rise of Skywalker 4K set was set to be here Sunday from FedEx, but after being "on the truck" for delivery all day Sunday, the package changed to PENDING later that night. Today it "arrived" at the facility again and was "on the truck for delivery" .... but, you guessed it, now (after the whole day went by) it has changed back to PENDING yet again.

I know getting a movie from FedEx right now is not a big deal compared to what's going on in the world... but I've been down this rabbit hole before. The package is lost or it will arrive randomly next week. I need something new to watch.

And how are the planning on getting it to us? Check or direct deposit? How do they get our bank information?

They'll use whatever info you provided on your last tax return.

If your direct deposit fails, they'll just mail you a check just like if there was an issue with the direct deposit of your return. The point is they'll use whatever info you submitted with your most recent income tax return.

My most recent tax return was last week and I asked for direct deposit. Before that, I had my refunds delivered the old fashioned way (by mail). I wish they would use direct deposit for the stimulus check because I'd get it faster but I didn't use that method in 2017. Bummer.

That sure is nice of your government to send you all checks to help out through some tough times.
