Jurassic World was pleasing as hell, the last 20 minutes is the reason we go to theaters.

I just feel that since this is such a huge event, a new Star Wars movie being released TEN years after the last, is why we're getting so much exposure and marketing for The Force Awakens.

We haven't seen this much marketing advertisement since the release of The Phantom Menace and I'm sure the following movies didn't get that much attention.

With that said, seeing how Disney plans to release a Star Wars movie every year (Episode VII (2015), Spinoff 1 (2016), Episode VIII (2017), Spinoff 2 (2018), Episode IX (2019), Spinoff 3 (2020), etc) for however long they plan to do so; when does a Star Wars movie STOP becoming an event and becomes another installment in a never-ending film franchise?

Will people eventually become tired out from too much Star Wars oversaturation in the movie theater market? I feel that moving forward with this takes away that sense of it being an event. Things like this don't come EVERY year, and now that they will, that novelty begins to wear off.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

Of course. It'll be just like the MCU from Disney after episode 7.

I agree jayman, the SW hoopla is manageable when it's once every three years (during the average trilogy 'cycle') but it's gonna get old real quick if the coverage reaches this level of saturation every year for the next few years.

But as you say, it's been 10 years since the last movie so I'm not surprised they've gone all out, the hype was very much like this for Phantom Menace. IMO the hype was even stronger back then because that had a longer gap to contend with (16 years) but that ended up biting a few people on the bum, wasn't it DK publishing that nearly went under because they'd produced so much Ep I stuff that didn't sell?

They haven't changed much, there's half a rain-forest's worth of superhero books on offer in my local Smiths and they'll be releasing at least 5 Star Wars books next week.

Yeah, I did notice the plethora of new Star Wars books from DK! I hope they've negotiated some better terms this time, in case lightning strikes twice...

Heres an image of the supposed trailers debuting with TFA Friday

Variety reports the security and space for the premiere of The Force Awakens on December 14th will be up to the standard of a night at the Oscars, with 50 LAPD officers will be patrolling the event. A huge tent, which spans three blocks, has been erected to accommodate the huge crowds. Three theaters, the El Capitan Theater, the Chinese, and a nearby Dolby Theater are all booked to fit all the people attending the premiere.

I think the hype for Phantom Menace was bigger. You had people camping out in front of theaters a damn month before it opened. Toys and books and games were all over store shelves. Fans bought movie tickets for Meet Joe Black and Wing Commander just to watch the trailer. It was insane.

Then again, it's tough to say for sure. These days, there's no need to buy a movie ticket just to see a trailer now that they debut online and a hundred million people watch it within 24 hours. Back when the teaser for Phantom Menace debuted, it took Lucasfilm a little while to upload it onto their site, so you either had to go buy a Meet Joe Black ticket or settle for a bootleg like this:

And back in 1999, there was no Fandango, so fans had to wait in line for hours at the local multiplex to preorder tickets. I think I stood in the hot sun for 3 hours at least to get mine. And of course with a lot of theaters doing reserved seating, you have to be a complete moron to camp out in front of a theater for a month(or even a week) in advance of the movie's opening.

And let's not forget the biggest factor of all. The Phantom Menace was following the Holy Trilogy, so everyone expected an epic new chapter in the saga that lived up to the greatness of the originals. With The Force Awakens, I think a lot of fans(including myself) are cautiously optimistic but very nervous after suffering through 3 disastrous prequels not to mention Crystal Skull.

I agree. As crazy as this seems now, it really was even crazier in '99.

Default Funny or Die Star Wars Holiday Special Spoof

Quote:
"BB-8 tries to make it home for Droid Day in a spoof of the original 1978 ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’, and it's just as awful as you'd hope."
http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/92d...=4qg0hz.nwumnq

The show opens with Kylo Ren trying to fly BB-8 home through an astroid field as he makes guesses as to his own heritage, and whether or not he is a Skywalker or a Solo. It's a bumpy ride, to be sure. They are headed to Jakku, which Kylo mistakes as Tatooine. Keeping within the spirits of the original 1978 tele-movie, which gave Chewbacca his own family, with a wife, kid and crusty old grandfather, BB-8 gets his own family, too. We get to meet his wife QT-PI, the cantankerous Gr0mp-E, and Lil-8. We're also promised a Droid Day song from Train and a special appearance by Shamu the Killer Whale.

I'll disagree with that. I'd say that "it's been 10 years" is probably about 10% of the hype. The other 90 is the fact that we never, ever, in our wildest dreams ever thought we'd see the OT gang back together again. We were always promised prequels. However, we NEVER thought there'd be anything after Jedi. All of this excitement is based in nostalgia and that's it. None of the other movies will have this type of hype around them because they simply can't.
PM wasn't like this. Not at all. Just because people waited on an actual line for showings has more to do with 1999 than hype. That was the way we did things back then. If we didn't have fandango and the internet now, they'd still be doing it.

Uhhh...let's see some evidence to back that up. No one has talked about 7-9 since the 80's. And, even then, it was never supposed to include Luke and the rest.

Alright well I agree to disagree. Don't forget how they let out the Indominus Rex and all the long monologues.

We are getting the hype because it's the first SW film in 32 years. Have you not noticed at the stores that its even more "classic" pictures on the T shirts from the 70's than it is even the new stuff. It's all the hype because it is Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Chewbacca back together again! Characters that we truly cared about. If it were not for that most would be cringing and saying to themselves oh no here goes another 1999-2005 again.
