But I've always been a picture quality guy, rather than an audio enthusiast.
Unlike TVs, and even AVRs, which call for far more frequent upgrading, investing money into really good speakers is especially well worth it as such speakers can provide you with decades of excellent performance. Of all the areas where we spend money on a home theater, nothing gives us as much bang for the buck. If you buy great speakers from the outset, you will rarely, if ever, need to replace them.

Are you saying something like this would be poor?

Until a new sound format comes along. Atmos didn't use to be a thing.

AVRs do not need to be upgraded all that often, so spending real money on them is very much worth it for the quality, the power, and the longevity of service, but great speakers give decades of faithful service and they definitely warrant all the investment that one can afford, in my opinion.

I'm glad you enjoy them. I'm now going to watch something. I'm not sure if we or I came to any conclusion but the discussion was interesting.

It's 10.30 pm here. Goodnight.

To me an AVR begins here; I am considering buying this one to upgrade my existing Denon:

Before I go (and I realise I'm opening a can of worms here) but if the bitrates are dropping as low as 5, 9 etc... and only reaching a high of 27, 32, and the picture always remains at a high level, than how can that be?

Picture great at 5, 9 Mbps via disc.
Picture great at 27, 32 Mbps, via disc.

Are bitrates that important?

Yes, 27 and 32 are better than the 15 mbps Netflix usually provides but 5 and 9 aren't necessarily (depends on what those moments are running at on Netflix.)

If you do buy that you can use Alexa to control it

An AVR like that would likely serve me well for over a decade and that alone more than makes it worth it. My Denon AVR 4806 cost about the same in 2006 and fourteen years later it is still a beast...just an outdated one without ATMOS.

And Alexa ain't welcome here.

I don't know what you are watching, but your satisfaction is all that is really important, numbers be damned.

I was talking about Alita but yes, you are right. I am intrigued to see whether Star Wars reaches those 65 to 75 mbps as touted. Somehow, I doubt it will.

I'm off to watch Bond. Bye.

Sometimes blu-ray.com posts the overall average bitrate for a 4K disc or blu-ray, but they are very inconsistent with which titles they provide it for.

Star Wars The Last Jedi 4K disc, for example, shows an overall average bitrate of 45.91 Mbps:

Under the "video" heading just to the right of the cover art image:

For Alita Battle Angle UHD disc, BDInfo V0.7 reports the file size as 54.58 GB, the length on the cover shows 122 minutes. That means the average for the title 60.74 Mbps.

BD and UHD BD uses VBR which means the bit rate is always changing.

I call bs on that. It never once went that high. It didn't reach 30 mbps in the opening two minutes. Even more interested in what Vilya says now...

And yes I am watching a film (at the same time.) Tomorrow Never Dies (Blu Ray) which is running at 18 mpbs (no more than 19) and not the 28 mpbs (average) that Blu Ray.com claims.

Better put this information where people could access it, because they have short memories and will always be asking. This Thread goes back many years when I had a Mitsubishi 62" 1080i DLP, and I had to buy the set I have now in order for people to take me serious. This group can be Vicious!
