Man, I hope Toho and Universal can work together to make a definitive, high res, copy of King Kong vs. Godzilla. I hate to pick between a cruddy video of the Japanese version or the superior, yet English, version.

Does anyone know how Toho lost their elements and how they got the video to show the complete movie?

No one knows the full story, but the majority of the composite video they're filling in the blanks with is coming from an old D2 master they used for the laserdisc box they released in the 90's. That footage was just good enough to make the DVD watchable... I can hardly imagine what it'll look like blown up to 1080p.

Most of the japanese rage came from the common knowledge that Universal has most of the elements available, but Toho will not work with them to put together a complete HD remaster (or at least a MORE complete HD remaster).

It's really a shame that their most popular catalog title is essentially lost for future, but at least the version that most of the english speaking world is familuar with is in good shape.

There's no word about any more U.S. releases.

Well, the news going around at Sony is that they are re-issuing the Heisei films that they own the rights to since they didn't have the original Japanese audio with English subs; except for Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla II. That would be Godzilla Vs King Ghidorah; Godzilla & Mothra: The Battle For Earth; Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla II; Godzilla Vs Spacegodzilla; and Godzilla Vs Destoroyah. But Sony doesn't own the rights to the first two Heisei films which is Godzilla '84/85 and Godzilla Vs Biollante. If they are re-issuing the DVDs, they have to have them coming to Blu-ray as well since Toho has the rest of the Heisei films coming out next month in Japan.

The Rebirth of Mothra series is also rumored to get a re-release from Sony.

Yeah, but I could careless about Rebirth of Mothra.

We still have three more Millennium films to go, hopefully, Godzilla 2000: Millennium will be soon.

Thank you SOOOO Much for giving me some hope! My Gojira on Blu is sitting under the tree just BEGGING to be opened! Out of the 40 some blu rays i've bought in the last 2 weeks, Gojira is the one I'm most excited to watch (even though the transfer has been said to be lackluster, but I don't care, because I LOVE Big G movies ).

What! But what about the masterpiece that's Rebirth of Mothra 2!

Have you seen the Japanese version of 2000?

I have it. The master copy that Classic Media made from the film source is High Definition but they just didn't take into consideration into getting it cleaned up. I think it looks all right, nothing to write home about but the sound is nice. The roars are nice and clear. Biggest complaint on the Gojira Blu-ray is the lack of Godzilla, King of the Monsters.

Jesus, don't get me started on Mothra 2! I saw it on tv when I lived in Germany and it was dubbed; and even in German, English, and Japanese; the film is crap! That whole kids running through the castle with a furball and those two guys was horrid. The monster, forget the name, that Mothra went up against was ok but it was too childish of a film.

I've got Godzilla 2000: Millennium. A lot of people hate it but it's got a special place in my heart seeing it's the first one I've seen in Japanese. So, I'm all for that one getting a Blu-ray release. I liked Takayuki Hattori's music which got butchered in the US edit.

I watched it once, late night on scifi channel. I was better off watching infomercials. The dubbing for the kids is enough to drive anyone mad.

I've never seen the japanese version but I have a soft spot for the film as well. It was the first and only godzilla film I saw in theaters and it was on my birthday. I've read they edited a ton of stuff for the US release so it'll be interesting to finally see the Jp edit one day.

They didn't edit too much out of G2K, just accouple of clips (only 9 minutes which doesn't make a diffrence). Most of the editing is the audio, which is improved except for Orga's roars. There's my 2 cents...

The main thing I deagree with on the US edit is the cutting of the whole "Millennium" sequence. It explained why Orga was here on Earth. He was looking for a "kingdom".

Yeah, they did beef up the roars on both Godzilla and Orga. Godzilla's roar sounded weak as hell whenever he wasn't full on roaring.

I'd expect another line up to announced in another two weeks or so for the May 2010 releases.

Yeah, the May announcements will probably come on January 21 here (January 22 Japan time) - the day the January wave is released. I have all 5 titles preordered.

I popped in Godzilla 1984 last night to check out the extras (didn't previously do that ). Anyway, there was an interesting 45+ minute making of documentary. They show how they made the big animatronic Godzilla, built the sets, and other facts about the film.

Cool, the Thai DVDs which I have for Godzilla Vs Biollante and Godzilla Vs Destoroyah have making of... on the discs. That animatronic that's the top half of the suit really creeps me out because it looks likes Satsuma that suit actor for the Heisei films and then it tilts down and it's like; "AHH!!!"

This makes me sad.

These 2 are my most favorite Godzilla films that can watch over and over. May never see the light of day for a Blu-Ray release outside of Japan. Sucks when rights holders do nothing.

Well, who knows. There might be a Hong Kong release on the horizon. I'm hoping there is. That will cut the costs in half for all these Blu-rays.
