I wonder if that guy also pitches a fit every time he's forced to buy a Blu-Ray with a digital copy or bonus DVD. Goodness, some people....

If I didn't already have the Bourne Trilogy Box Set, I'd be importing the UK one right now instead of buying the Bourne flippers. The price for the flippers would have to drop down to $10 or less for me to even think about picking them up, and even then I'd probably still go with the UK Set. I got lucky with The Bourne Trilogy Set 'cos when it came out, I was able to get it for $34.99 from Best Buy. I had a $10 RZ certificate, and I picked it up on release week with some tax software I bought that knocked another $20 off the price of any dvd or blu-ray. I just did the same thing this year with Blade Runner (paid $14.99).

I'm a fan of the blu/dvd combos that have been coming out 'cos I have kids, and I don't mind letting some family members borrow movies. I was going to be selling off or trading in dvds as I upgrade to blu, but with the prices they are going for these days, I have decided to pick up some extra multi-disc blu-ray cases (2 and 3 versions mostly), or just add an extra sticky hub to a single disc case. I can then add the dvd's I already own into the case, and if someone wants to borrow it and they have not gone blu yet, I can still hook them up. If I had a dvd/blu flipper, I guess I could still let them borrow it, but I'd be worried 'cos flippers just attract fingerprints so damn easily. I like the idea of loaning out the dvd or letting the kids watch the dvd in their room or on their portable player, while the blu-ray disc stays safe in the case.
Very good comment Mr. B.

So because you had problems with laser discs 20 years ago, everyone that buys BD combos are going to experience the above?

I don't keep my movies outside in a toolshed during the hot Summer, so I'm not worried at all about any issues.
Because you haven't read any post regarding the problem that I experienced in the past does not mean it will not happen. Flippers have not been out that long. It takes time for this problem that I have described to surface. Guess you'll be happy if the problem does surface... huh?

BTW, the separation of the laser disc was due to the player getting the disc too hot. The cement that sealed the two layers would develop air pockets after a few times of playback forcing the disc to go bad.

Good for you... I am SOOOOOO glad you do not keep your movies out in the tool shed under the hot sun. That's a brilliant idea you have there. Anyone else keep their blus in a hot tool shed?

Wonder if they are region free? I went to Amazon and saw a note that the blus may not be compatible with the players in the USA.

"Nothing has happened yet, BUT SOMETHING MIGHT STILL HAPPEN!" is not a legitimate complaint about a product in any way, shape, or form. Nice try. Actually, no. Terrible try.

I say who cares. if the BD is still looking very good and the other dvd side doesnt take anything away from it then why not? some people may have a blu-ray in there living room but not the bedroom so that would come in handy etc. as long as it doesnt take anything away from my viewing pleasure then i say "Don't care one way or the other."

I don't see the big deal with flippers. I had a few double-sided DVDs and sure the lack of artwork was a little annoying and they could become fingerprint magnets if you weren''t careful, but in a time before BD this was a great way to get more info on one disc, even if it was just including both the full and widescreen versions. Now its being used to release BD/DVD combos on one disc and I don't see a big problem as long as it's the same great quality. If you really have a problem with the blank sides print out a custom disc label and slap it on the DVD side. And for the love of god, make sure you slap it on the DVD side.

As far as I'm concerned, the jury will be out on flippers for probably two or three years. It could take that sort of time for them to fail if indeed they are going to be prone to failure, which we don't know yet.

Let's face it, releasing a film I want as a flipper won't prevent me from buying it if it's the only available version, but I won't have a good feeling about it. And if it's available elsewhere as a normal Blu-ray disc, that's where my money will go.

Unless you own a BD player made out of crystal or clear acrylic, I find this hardly an issue.

It looks like there are many people that dislike flippers and have provided anywhere from reasonable to OCD reasons as to why they feel the way they do. What boggles my mind is why do so many people here care why others don't like flippers and feel the need to criticize those people. If you like or don't care either way about flippers then Universal is very happy for you and will be more than happy to take your money. The rest of us are fine waiting until Universal decides to offer either standalone blus or seperate the dvd to a seperate disc.

The executives at Universal must drink the same water as the idiot execs from NBC - flippers and Jay Leno at 10:00.

How stupid can things get?

Partially correct... In reality Laser Rot was cause by plants that did not have their disc curing process set up correctly. Everyone corrected this issue by the early 1990's, except for Sony, who never fixed their Terra Haute, IN plant.

It was a know issue, so much so, Image/Disney actually ran a quiet replacement program for Beauty and The Beast: WIP when they discovered they screwed up.

I disagree. Would you get a 2011 Toyota if you weren't sure that they had completely fixed the problems once and for all? Similar products from the same company that produced defective products (i.e. Universal and their dual-sided discs) are inherently riskier to purchase, especially when the company has not been transparent to customers regarding the previous failures.

Are there any non-anecdotal reports about failures of Universal's dual-sided HDDVDs? I never really had more problems than regular HDDVDs with them.
