I can't wait for the EE...hopefully it'll match the DVD (Digi) bookstyle package of the LOTR EE...... I think it'd look nice next to each other on a shelf.

I'm looking forward to the extended cut in hopes that it will do to it what the extended cut did to The Two Towers. I really feel like the movie needs to breathe a little more, pace itself properly. I'm not a big fan of the current state of the film as it tends to meander from one thought to the next in an irregular pattern. Some complain the movie is too long. I don't think it's long enough, personally. It might be too long based on the current blotchy pacing, but if the film is allowed to stretch it's legs it could be perfect.

Walt Disney's storymen could take shortcuts with only half as many dwarves (or dwarfs, in his case) by giving them descriptive names. And most of us can name all 7. Would that be true of all 13 dwarves in THE HOBBIT if Jackson had not taken the time to give them each their own piece of screen? I know I have a much greater feel for the dwarves as individuals now, and I have read THE HOBBIT many times (particularly Bombur -- when you see the film you will know what I mean). If we are going to care what happens to the dwarves they have to seem real to us, not just a glob of extras.

PJ says Q4 13 for a extended cut, then Warner pull the announcement in a kind of "Hey PJ, just make the movies, we will announce whats coming and when thank you very much".

I would certainly like to see more screen time for Radagast, but I would disagree that the performance was true to the implied character.

Well it's pretty obvious now, that there will be extended edition, so the question is will WB released it right away or will they milk it first with theatrical version and then later with extended version?

I will only buy extended edition, so no problem to me. But it's pretty stupid to first sell theatrical edition and then months later extended edition when we all know, that there will be new version later. I really hope, that they released both at the same time.

I'm only buying the EE as well. But there's probably enough people who will buy both separately making it more profitable to release the EE later...

I've read the Hobbit and seen the movie... and I still couldn't name them all. Damn Tolkien for wanting them all to sound exactly the same... well, mostly.

I'll be waiting until all three films are released. I have the EE trilogy of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so I want it to match. Anyways, I'm perfectly fine waiting until all three are released. I'll just borrow the EE of The Hobbit from a friend when it's out so I can see the extended footage to hold me over.

Iarwain ben-adar (aka Tom Bombadil) was, in his own words, the first in middle earth and is referred to as "Eldest". Even the ring held no interest for him (Excuse the syntax; I occasionally fall back in this mode). He wasn't, however, a blithering idiot. Wish PJ had included, as I said earlier, The Old Forest, In the House of Tom Bombadil, and Fog on the Barrow-downs in the Fellowship. If "making up for" something was his intention, maybe he should have just done it right from the beginning.

That being said, I appreciated the comment from the person who wanted to see a re-imagining of the books. While I can appreciate that perspective, it's tough when you love the book.

I know this is a little (okay, a lot) arcane, but some thought Professor Tolkien made a mistake by referring to "dwarfs" as "dwarves". He pointed out that the dwarves were a race of people and unrelated to human beings.

I was confused by who was whom after the first few visited Bilbo, but here they are

Edit - With regard to PJs possible connection between Radagast and Bombadil, my take is that Bombadil wouldn't have freaked out if Sauron himself attacked "The House of Tom Bombadil" (Gandalf said something along the lines that he would be the last to fall as he was the first). Some say Tom lived on the Barrow-downs and some say The Old Forest. I don't think it's clear.

Thank you. Quite entertaining. I haven't read The Hobbit for many years, but don't recall Bifur checking out that way. Wonder if PJ thought this would be a funny way to bring "Bifurcation" into the movie.

I just got back from seeing this a few hours ago. I thought it was pretty good. Not great, but pretty much as good as I expected. I like that many of the main characters in this story are dwarves; in the Lord Of The Rings, Gimli is really the only dwarf (other than a few you see at the council). I think that Martin Freeman was very good as Bilbo. My only real problems were that there are a few too many battles.

[Show spoiler]When Bilbo reappears after they all escape the mountain and tells Thorin that he will help him get his home back, I felt like that would have been the perfect ending. But 2 seconds later, they're attacked again.

I was disappointed when they showed Ian Holm as old Bilbo. I'm glad they used him, but they did a terrible job with his hair. They should have tried to make him look closer to the way he did in Fellowship. This picture says it all:


I also kind of felt like Radagast and everything about the "necromancer" could have been cut out, but that will probably end up seeming more important in the next movie. All in all, I was pleased, though. I'm just glad we don't have to wait 2 or 3 years between each movie.

Edit: I was also skeptical going in about Peter shooting at 48 fps, but it really didn't bother or distract me at all.

About the Dwarves--I agree. The thing I love most about this movie is that we're given new perspectives on these races, seeing more deeply into the culture of both the Hobbits and Dwarves (not to mention Middle-Earth itself). I'll have a better understanding and appreciation for all the characters when I re-watch LOTR for the millionth time.
