I absolutely agree that we need more 3D horror movies. I buy pretty much every one that comes out.

Those movies were going to rank high anyway. 3D was just extra money to pad the bottom line.

I think we need a new "3D is Dead in 2015" thread. Then this time next year, we can start a new "3D is Dead in 2016" thread. I mean, sooner or later it's going to be true

If your bar for 3D's success is "everything is in 3D" and "everybody loves 3D" you will consider anything less than that a failure. At this point it's a given that it'll be an option for certain films. It doesn't necessarily increase the number of tickets sold, but as long as it converts a large percentage of tickets that would be sold anyways into more expensive tickets, it'll be around for a while.

I really hope filmmakers start using 3D for films other than big blockbusters and lower-budget B-movies. And it would be great if there were auteurs who were known for how well they used 3D, the way someone like David Lean was known for his use of widescreen. Currently it's mostly used as a nice but non-essential add-on, rather than an integral part of a film.

Why do you care how much money a film makes? For me, the moment I'd class 3D as being dead (for that year - of course we know it'll come back as it always has) is when we stop getting films with any artistic merit and all we get are blockbusters that would generate large sums of money whether in 2D or 3D.

3D has been around since the very beginning of cinema. Of course dead for any given year won't mean dead dead never to return (and I don't think that was the point of this thread) - just that that year's offerings of 3D won't push the medium any further, artistically.

Some people have already highlighted some interesting offerings for 2015 (The Walk, Inside Out, Tomorrowland and Everything Will Be Fine).

Quick reality check, but lets not pretend that most 3D films ever were of great "artistic merit" whatever that means. Most of the 3D films made in the last decade were blockbusters, CG animation and until recently horror films and that's what its most suited for. Also I don't think that a film is necessarily bad because it's successful and several of 2014s 3D blockbusters were good films and got great reviews. There is the occasional 3D arthouse film, but that's been happening at the rate of one or two a year.

I didn't say that all 3D films before 2014 were great. It's all subjective but the point I was making was that 2014 was a rubbish year for 3D films in terms of a combination of recognition critically, at the box office and in the industry itself:-

"16 films in 5 previous years - 63 noms, 23 wins
3 films in 2014 - 3 noms, 0 wins"

Many critics though last year was a well above average year for blockbusters (most of which were in 3D). Guardians of the Galaxy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Edge of Tomorrow, CA2, the last X-Men and several CG animation features, all got great reviews.

I would not go by the Oscars in what is quality. The Oscars priorities and likes change from year to year and this year it mostly likes small indie films they liked. There also is plenty of nominated awards bait which I would not consider good films. So you can show me statistics of awards films and it doesn't mean anything in terms of 3D and quality films. The Academy missed even nominating the 3D CGI animation feature which got the best reviews last year, The Lego Movie.

At the box office??? Based on what? I already said 8 of the top 10 worldwide grosses were from 3D movies. 2014 was a great year for 3D. The Oscars are a joke and that is last measure I would use to judge whether a given year has been productive for 3D or not. I don't disagree with your statement that not many 3D movies won Oscars but who cares about Oscars, they are a waste of time. Saying 2014 was a bad year box office wise is completely incorrect.

Agreed. This is what we tend to get. Huge blockbusters in "3d" that would sell a ton regardless of whether it is 3d or not.
And you have to love people that will say that the top 10 grossing movies for any given year were 3d movies, when the majority of tickets sold for those movies were for 2d showings.

Whatever happens, 3d is still a shit gimmick that hasn't been used to any positive degree in years now. I hope it dies, but if not, screw it anyway.

Looking at WORLDWIDE grosses, Mockingjay came in fifth place, and Interstellar in tenth. The rest were in 3D.
