With Macross Plus, I'm not a huge fan, but I very much appreciate it on a technical perspective- it's very well directed, acted (in Japanese), and the music is great. In addition it has still to this day, possibly the best Itano Circus sequence in anime.
That said, I much prefer Do You Remember Love over Plus, but I wouldn't mind re-watching Plus again for the great aerial combat sequences. |

Macross Plus still has my favorite music in all of anime, so it doesn't even matter if it falls in line with the rest of the Macross saga, imo. I still remember the orgasmic feeling of walking in Shibuya Tokyo at night with my ear buds in, listening to Idol Talk, and having the feels of awesomeness of being in Japan being turned up to 11 with that song, lol
Also, as soon as the UK dares to do so, I'm buying everything Macross I can on bluray asap! =) |

Macross Plus feels more like Cowboy Bebop than the original SDF Macross since so many of the same people were involved (although the character designer was different). When it came out the character designs by Masayuki did take some getting used to (Macross 7 had the more traditional Mikimoto designs), but I thought they suited the slightly darker, more mature story. The CG was pretty groundbreaking (and costly) at the time. Watanabe would also employ CG for certain scenes in Bebop four years later. In my opinion, CG always becomes dated much faster than traditional cel animation.

I love it, though. Still one of the best pieces of anime I've ever seen (the full OVA, never seen the movie version). |

Macross Plus is definitely a totally different beast imo. Very different presentation, tone and style from Macross overall, even the "idol" music is a totally different style. Totally worth it for the music and animation though.
The OVAs didn't quite grab me but I really liked the movie version (I just preferred the theatrical format pacing is all), will probably give the OVAs a rewatch because I just jumped on a copy of the IT Dynit BD of them for $16 AUD. |

There’s little reason not to get Macross Plus if you can sub your own stuff

But $16 AUD and my decision to give the OVA format another watch is hard not to jump on. Might just get the JP Movie-only edition later. |

I finally removed the seal from the bonus BD/PS3 hybrid disc included with the Macross Frontier movie boxset. There's an impressive amount of content on the disc that puts most anime releases to shame. The BD side includes, among other things, a making-of documentary, interviews, PVs, and a recording from a Playstation Home concert (this has not aged well at all lol).
The PS3 side contains a lot of artwork, sketches and an extensive interactive walk through the whole animation process of the movies. Here are some screenshots from the walk through (captured with CFW): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I also took some quick screenshots from PS Home concert. Bomberman (RIP) makes a cameo appearance in the audience. [Show spoiler]

Any word on when/if the USA will get older Macross stuff released on DVD/Blu-Ray.
I don't like importing, and obviously don't like bootlegs. Heard good things about stuff like Frontier, Delta, and saw Macross Zero (friend had a non-legit copy). I have SDF Macross from ADV, Macross Plus (prefer the 4 episode version over the movie version), and Macross II: Lover's Again (very underrated IMO) on DVD. |
