Quite right. Taken on its own terms Blade Runner 2049 is highly sophisticated cinema and dramatically involving in the best way. But they already know the numbers a film has to make, so they know that even the highest possible numbers from a home-video bestseller won't be sufficient to recover the investment.

If Deakins had not resisted stereoscopic photography the box-office returns might be a different story. To see a legitimately photographed stereoscopic film that mines the technology and is artfully shot in the technology can be an extraordinary experience. 3-D has saved movies at the box-office many times. But this conversion is minimal at best and chintzy most of the time, so it's not really a 3-D experience at all. Further, the release strategy takes the "event" out of 3-D screenings. It's only being shown once at night in most outlets, and Deakins has been vociferous in telling people not to see it, which is more resistance than the occasion calls for. He seems determined to shoot his film in the foot. I don't know what his problem is. Perhaps it's a kind of snobbery.

I'm guessing the idea is that in this depicted future spinners (flying cars) are very expensive, and the vast majority of people with any kind of wealth have moved off world. Basically the city/world is completely filled with lower class, which is really the ONLY class remaining on earth aside from the tycoons (Wallace). The only ppl with access to Spinners are the very wealthy, and government personal when necessary.

I think the idea presented (at least to me) is that by now most of the people who could afford flying cars have moved off-world, leaving only the police still getting around that way.

He doesnt want the movie to be seen? Why? I dont know who this Deakins guy is .

Also in general if its not a mindless crazy action flick like avengers, then most people wont go see it in theatres. rFiday or saturday night with your girl you want to see a horror movie or an action movie.

He's been saying he doesn't recommend the 3-D version, that he doesn't like 3-D even though he supervised the conversion.

He's been saying Blade Runner 2049 should be seen flat.

Since his preference is for 2D, I plan to see it in 2D in the theater, and then I'll check out the 3D on blu-ray.

Inception and Interstellar didn't come in 3D, same as Sicario and Arrival.
Blade Runner 2049 in converted 3D is perhaps a new strategy to resurrect 3D?

Of course not, but maybe to make some extra money on the sideline, and in the Chinatown?

If the last bit turns out to come true, then 3D might be what saves the movie financially....

Yes, do see it. Then tell us what you think. Ryan Gosling is beginning to come into his voice.

Yes, other than the garbage trucks dumping stuff, he was pretty much one of the very few people flying above the city. Except for
[Show spoiler]the flying attackers near the end.

If you go during the day time, the crowds are a lot smaller thankfully, which might help the safety concern.

Strong 3D as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is the best way to keep 3D going, compared to milder 3D efforts as seen in Blade Runner 2049, which makes people think twice before supporting 3D again in theaters, as with Star Wars Episode I's mild 3D conversion decided by Lucas as another sci-fi example.

Where I'm at the 3-D version is only shown once a day, and then late at night. 10:30 pm. In a theater that brags about its state-of-the-art projection but is actually slovenly.

Absolutely Right.
It can't be said often enough: strong 3-D is the best way to keep 3-D going.

Caught an Imax 3D screening today.

An unremarkable conversion. The film is not composed for 3D.

So which home formats will the US receive? I’ve been holding off on my pre-order, trying to be loyal to 3D in America, and the special edition with the blaster replica sold out on AMAZON DE. Following that disappointment I joined Paul’s GB for the HMV MONDO 4K/3D Steele to ensure I don’t miss out.

I have seen no pre-orders in the US for either the 4K or 3D versions and have heard no announcements. Also, ONLY Amazon DE listied Special Edition Blaster Set but it wouldn’t be cost effective for a single, small market.

Does anyone have any info on the US release? Is the replica blaster set available elsewhere? Thanks!

Saw this back to back - IMAX laser (2D) on Wednesday and in 3D/Atmos yesterday - and yes the 3D is pretty nonessential for the overall enjoyment.

2D and 4K are up for preorder in the US, but no sign of the 3D. I just put my preorder in at Amazon UK. It's a Sony release in the UK, so it should be region free.

Nice twist, didn't expect another SONY/UK solution for the latest region A/1 Blu-ray 3D no-show.

Better to release a complete 3D package experience than to releas a half assed one. Just hurts the format more.
