I just got Outlaw Star UK BD release, and while is freaking amazing looking, I noticed that the English audio is completely botched. Only on the first 4 or 5 episodes, it sounded fine. It's on the remaining episodes where it's completely mess up. There is no bass! None at all! During the OP sequences, it is very noticeable. I toggle between the English and Japanese tracks during the OP sequences. On the JP track, I hear the bass just fine while I don't hear it all on the English track. It's like anything below the 120 Hz range is completely muted or silence enough where you can't hear it. Maybe it's just the OP sequence that is mess up. I still have yet to verify if there are bass problems during action sequences on the English audio in comparison the Japanese track.

Since the UK is a 1:1 clone of the JP release, then it will have the same audio issue. I wonder if it's the same problem on the Funimation release since it's from the same source? I'll be surprised if there are no issues at all with English audio getting the bass sound botched.

Well there's no English audio on the JP release- so the issue wouldn't be present on that one.

I can confirmed that it's just the OP sequences that are mess up. Everything else sounds just fine. Although the JP audio is a bit louder overall. So it's not really much of a big deal though. I think it's just a source problem with the original recording.

There is obvious quality loss from compression. For a set that is more expensive than AL's set I think its pretty poor honestly.

Screenshot 4 looks like a serious loss of grain and some compression artifacts while the others suffer some compression issues little grain loss issues. Other than that, looks very good. I could had settle for that release, but since it was more expensive than the Anime Limited releases, the obvious choice would be that one over the Funi's releases. It sucks that some of the film grain is gone though.

Now that it's settle, what about the audio? I did more comparisons between the Japanese track and the English track last night, and I'm afraid that there is a serious loss of bass during the episodes. During the episode where Suzuka chases Gene throughout an alley and to the streets at night, the background music is playing. On the JP track I hear the bass loud and clear, but on the English track not at all. Turning up the volume didn't do anything nor increasing the bass output on my AVR. I'm thinking that it's just a bad sound mix through and through which is beyond Anime Limited's control.

The fact that it doesn't seem to have any issues with the brightness is astounding to me

But, as I said, the UK release is better

Funi has brightness issues on their releases? I thought it was Sentai that has that problem a lot more any other company.

Yeah, UK version is definitely superior and it was mentioned way before Funi released it.

Can anyone confirm if the bass is still a problem on the funi release?

All American anime publishers do, at least some (most) of the time. Except for Aniplex, of course.

hmm I looked at more of the caps and I can say it's worse than I thought, looks a bit noise reduced to me & that's a major no-no.

Yes, one of the best example is Terror in resonnance, the brightness is completly of compared to the Japan edition.

It isn't anywhere near as bad Bebop. I would actually even say that it's a pretty decent looking encode, despite the compression issues and the not so well resolved grain, but considering there's a cheaper and better alternative out there it does kind of reflect poorly on Funi.

Well considering that they used the same source, most likely yes. I doubt they would go to the trouble to fix any audio issues. I wish I can get my hands on the Funi release just to check it out.

What should I be seeing here? The bottom looks slightly brighter and it's missing a lot of grain. Yes, I am blind, so you're going to have to point it out for me.
