Ang Lee on ‘Gemini Man’ and De-Aging Will Smith

Quote:
[Lee] he leapt at “Gemini Man” because it gave him a chance to experiment with the high frame rates and 3D filmmaking he previously deployed to polarizing effect in 2016’s “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.”

“I believe in it,” Lee said in an interview shortly after screening “Gemini Man” for a group of New York City journalists. “It’s a new medium. It’s full of potential. It’s a new language. If it’s not me, somebody else will figure it out.”

Lee believes that the higher frame rate of between 60 frames per second to 120 frames per second creates a more immersive experience. In the case of “Gemini Man,” it does make action sequences more visceral — guns crackle, glass shatters, motorcycles rev up in a palpable, almost tactile manner. But the hyper-realism is not for everyone.

I'm excited to see how it looks, and I liked the trailers for Gemini Man, so I'm in to check this movie out in high frame rate!

Yeah the early reactions are really praising the HFR 3D. I was already planning to see it that way and now I'm even more excited. The movie still doesn't look great but I'm looking forward to experiencing the tech.

Yeah, I lost interest, but due to the buzz, I'll probably see it for the 3D.

I really would like to see it in 3D HFR but having never seen a HFR film, I'm afraid I'll get a headache or get nauseous or something. Is it like soap opera effect?

I’m assuming the HFR 3D version won’t be playing anywhere near me even though I’m in a major city. I’ll still see it in an IMAX or 3D screening.

The trailer keeps playing in the cinema and the effects are downright awful.

The de-aged will smith doesn't look remotely real when you look into the eyes....it's so damn weird.

Didnt Peter Jackson say that the asthetic for An Unexpected Journey was a mistake, and he corrected the sequels to have a more film like appearance, but still in HFR?

I saw Desolation of Smaug in imax 3D and the picture looked much more natural.

That makes sense. I only saw Battle/Five Armies in HFR 3D but I thought it was excellent. Always kinda assumed that Jackson tweaked his HFR approach after the reception it got with Unexpected Journey.

Jackson did just that, and I noticed HFR 3D looked much better on the Hobbit sequels with the improved color grading (still think one is a bit more aware of the sets and makeup though).

But Billy Lynn in 4K 3D 120fps was really something different. It’s easily the most “I’m inside the movie” type effect I’ve ever felt with unbelievable clarity of image and sense of three dimensional depth, and perhaps due to contemporary setting and realistic sets I didn’t have that Hobbit issue. But Lee is right it’s a new language, if you want a traditional cinematic look, it’s about as far away from that as you can go.

Also, you can see Lee based his cinematography and editing choices around the format, so whereas I think Hobbit can work fine in any format, with Billy Lynn if you aren’t seeing it in at least HFR or 3D (ideally both combined), it doesn’t play nearly as well.

The CG stunt work looks a bit off but I applaud its ambition at least.

Variety

Quote:
The bizarre combination of flesh-and-blood star Will Smith, his much-younger digital clone, director Ang Lee and Jerry Bruckheimer makes for a high-concept misfire.

The Hollywood Reporter

Quote:
Behind its high-tech visual gimmicky, Gemini Man is a dumb, depthless, undemanding fanboy pleaser which plants Smith dangerously close to Liam Neeson and Nicolas Cage in the midlife action-man league.

This digital version of Smith, so is it 100% as in the clothes are CG too? Literally everything about the character is CG? Or is it a CG head over live action stand in? I see everything saying the younger version is 100% CG.
