Finally picked up the Universal disc. This is the French disc but as it has German ratings on the disc and Japanese subs, I am gonna go ahead and say that Universal only authored one disc.

A bit late to the party on this one.
Spotted it on Netflix initially but got 5 mins in and noped the hell out, the quality was absolutely abysmal and the encode had a weird, coarse, error-laden look to it. Not sure what it was exactly, but every now and then, some encodes on Netflix just go full toilet mode. Just got the UK disc and popped it in for a second to check out how it holds up and it's night and day. All footage is given room to breathe but the 65mm stuff is wonderful, so much presence. Black levels are superb too. ![]() A heads up for anyone ordering from Amazon UK. I ordered yesterday and received the following variant today: Viva Elite Eco Case (sealed, slimline, ~12.5mm?) Slipcover Included 4K UHD BD + 1080P BD No Postcards/Extras Edit: Just read the rest of the thread. Disappointing about the magenta push. I must've only caught a glance of the solid shots.. I've tried it in converted SDR but it somehow looks even worse, that red push is so pervasive it just ruins it every which way. Even using the white balance controls on the TV can only do so much, even if I dial red back by like 20 points it STILL looks redder than the SDR grade on the BD. Abysmal.

Do you know if the accompanying French Blu-ray disc is region-free?

Judging from some of the comments in this thread, it sounds like the 4K version on Vudu actually looks really good, and doesn't contain the heavy pink/magenta push? Can someone confirm this?
Was thinking of getting the 4K blu-ray, but since the 4K streaming version is currently on sale at Vudu for $7.99, I might just go for that instead. |

[QUOTE=Geoff D;17031204]
So I went ahead and did a few more "shot to shot" comparisons of the 4k UHD and the BR releases of this film that I enjoyed so very much watching in theatres in 2019. For a time I actually worked at Final Frame myself, the company who did a lot of the post-production work (before this project existed) and was not surprised they did such an amazing job making this picture look as gorgeous as it looks. I have a background in digital compositing for film but even to an untrained eye the differences are big enough between both to notice. With that being said, my findings were that both formats have their pros and cons, here and there to be considered and pointed out if you are wondering about the two versions. Ultimately, my conclusion is that it is obvious the BR has a more natural, consistent and neutral way of looking than the 4K, that said, there are some things you might want to keep that in mind before disregarding the 4k: 1) The difference is not always that big or necessarily better on every shot but rather more noticeable on specific sequences and shots of specific formats. 2) The 4k is still considerably superior in terms of resolution and in some shots I feel like the color of the 4k looks arguably better than the BR, which might look a little too "blue" for my taste and don't remember it being as such in theatres either, rather very neutral if anything. 3) If you so loved the immaculate high-resolution this film had in theatres, you might prefer the 4k if the colours aren't completely a deal breaker for you, granting it is far from perfect but naturally superior in resolution to the BR. Specially if you have a really big screen, some 4k shots might look absolutely amazing all things considered. Even the B&W stock pictures from the beginning of the doc. look really good and better than the BR in my opinion. (Please excuse the time bar showing in some of the frames, I realized they stayed after quick capturing). Capture 1 Blu Ray 4k Capture 2 BR 4K Continued... |
