That steelbook looks incredible. I'm definitely pre-ordering. It's nice that they displayed the love for Shrek displayed by the Donkey.

Hey y'all.

How does the movie remastered in 4K look like? Was the animation somewhat improved?

It's probably going to be upscaled from 2K with HDR applied. I doubt the animation will be improved but personally I never thought Shrek's animation was good. Even for its time I thought Monsters Inc looked more impressive, or even Toy Story 2 for that matter.

It's hard to tell without knowing the process and source file by which they upscaled the image to 4k and applied an HDR grade.

Well this is pretty lame, Target is having a B2G1 and the standard 4K version of Shrek is part of it, but not the steelbook, which costs $3 less.

I feel you. Sometimes it doesn’t feel that long ago, but god that was middle school for me.

I watched Shrek last night for the first time in ages, debating whether I should upgrade. I'll pass. The animation is a little crude in spots, which is to be expected for 20 years ago, but it lacked some of the timelessness of the best animated features. Using pop songs doesn't help. It's still enjoyable, though -- and I'll be curious what people think of UHD.

I personally don't believe in that, I want to see all of the picture that was made to be seen.

The only cropping that should be done where it obviously goes over and shows the edge of sets and equipment or gets to the edges of cel animation.

In that twitter thread he says Shrek was finished at 1102 tall so there's absolutely no reason it has to lose more picture than it needs to, especially when it's only 20 pixels above and below if cropped to 1.85:1.

Admittedly 1.85 to 1.78 is not really severe and even Disney did it with their Renaissance films and even their new films like The Princess and the Frog and Tangled. But whenever The Jungle Book or The Sword in the Stone comes up is just annoying. Yeah let's have more empty background, who cares that the characters look so small in every wide shot or that close ups lose their meanings, as long as I can look at empty backgrounds instead.

I just remembered that Aladdin and Mulan are in 1.66 instead of 1.78, which is dumb cause all the cinematic aspects of these films are completely lost.
